Not getting horn beep sometimes using keyless 2000 XJ

Thats it, 2000 XJ not getting the horn sound all the time when using keyless...anyone know where to start troubleshooting? The horn works all the time so I don't think its a problem with the horn or relays. It works sometimes and other times it just locks the doors and doesn't honk.

Thanks

Might just be dirty contacts in the remote. Can you open it and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser?

Mine didn't honk at all. Found this in the FSM

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY RECEIVER
PROGRAMMING
The optional Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system
for this vehicle has a customer programmable horn
chirp feature. The horn chirp is requested by the
RKE receiver through a hard-wired circuit to the
horn relay, whenever a valid Lock message is
received from a programmed RKE radio transmitter.
The purpose of the horn chirp is to provide the
vehicle operator with an audible verification that the
Lock request has been received by the RKE receiver.
However, for any number of reasons, some customers
may prefer that this feature be disabled. This RKE
system allows them that option.
To program the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
receiver so that the horn chirp feature is disabled,
proceed as follows:
(1) While within the reception range of the RKE
receiver, press and hold the Lock button of a programmed
RKE transmitter depressed for five to ten
seconds.
(2) While holding the RKE transmitter Lock button
depressed, press and release the RKE transmitter
Unlock button.
(3) The RKE horn chirp feature is now disabled.
Repeating the preceding steps will again enable
the RKE horn chirp feature.

LazyXJ:

Great information, but OP's issue is intermittent horn operation, probably not a programming problem.

If he keeps the remote in his pants pocket or something, I can see accidentally entering those sequences by sitting down wrong. You wouldn't believe the numbers I've accidentally called on my cellphone by doing the same thing :looney:

Yeah, I've done a bit of "butt" dialing!

Forgot to mention that my 01 world intermittently honk, when using the remote to lock it. After reprogramming it, it works all the time.

Cleaning the remotes battery contacts is a good suggestion.
After cleaning, dab a little dielectric grease on the contacts and batteries to keep the contacts clean.

With the remote in my pocket, it often locks the XJ when I working near it.
It sometime is startling to have it honk.
Strange thing is that is never unlocks the XJ

My 99 fails to beep sometimes when it's very wet outside. Reprogramming doesn't help. Eventually it comes back. It has no effect on lock operation when this happens, so it's clearly not the batteries in the remote. I suspect condensation or leakage in the roof getting at the electronics of the receiver.

x2...but I've had my overhead console down and found no signs of water damage...but there could be some condensation because I've noticed that it doesn't work as often when its wet out.

I'll try the reprogramming deal but I don't think thats the problem.

Also the locks do work fine when it doesn't beep...but sometimes I'm like 50 yards away and have to walk back to it just to make sure that my locks are locked.
