when i crank the ol xj up the lifters make a tapping noise for a second then it goes away..
i know its not normal but it doesn't affect the way then engine runs.
With 196k it still runs great with no smoking ..
So what should i do? live with it or do a top end rebuild?
get my head "freshened" up? or just wait for it to crap ?

thanks xj family!

Honestly, if its tapping, its not the lifters. The lifters don't tap. The noise they make is in a ticking flavor transmitted by the rocker arms which become loose when there is no oil pressure at initial start up. Generally, a tap heard at initial start up is caused by loose clearances in the rod bearings. This is a very common problem with older 4.0's. But, here's my good news. I wouldn't worry about it until it makes that noise all the time. If it's quiet once it's started, then keep on trucking on.

Tapping noise....HAHAH...mine KNOCKS!!! REALLY KNOCKS. Been doing it for 1.5 yrs. i dont worry with it. Like i was told, 4.0 are a dime a dozen. run it it till she blows!!

One mans definition of "tapping " may differ from anothers. If it continues to bother you, pull the valve cover and check the rocker lash. If it is the rod bearings, just turn up the radio. Rebuild when it gets REALLY bad, you will know.

Mine makes a bit of noise, I tell myself that the engine is telling me that it loves me.
