NO shocks a bad idea?

Utter BS. I'm currently running one shock on my rear because I ripped the shock mount off the axle last offroad trip, and this is the 2nd time its has happened. The change in handling is almost negligible. The first time it happened I notice it bounced for a little longer than normal, but it is no where close to oscillating up and down just driving down the road. Its leaf springs in the rear, and spring itself will hinder damping, the shock damper is there just to return the system to a state of rest in the shortest amount of time, to provide a more comfortable ride. Coils would be a little worse, but its not as bad with leaf springs. I'm just saying, its not the Apocalypse like you are making it out to be.

Think about how many older cars are out there with blown out shocks, are they loosing control around every turn?

DISAGREE

I ran my XJ with NO shocks for 4 days. When I hit a pot hole going around a corner, the back end bounced so badly I heard tires squeeling. It drove like ASS, the rear end bounced around and lost contact at times, etc.
it was NOTABLY worse than having one leaky-as-hell & one slightly-leaky OEM shock on there. Like, night and day difference.
I wouldn't drive an XJ without shocks again. I'd rather ride my bicycle to work.

the OP asked, received feedback and resolved their situation.

"I ran my XJ with NO shocks for 4 days." apples -vs- oranges
is not the situation in question, no shocks in the rear was the question, and the reply of;
"Utter BS. I'm currently running one shock on my rear because..." mac apples -vs- granny smith apples
is personaly experience with the situation in question.

and later on there were direct apple -vs- apples experiences which were also submitted.

my mistake -
The front shocks were in place, the rears were out. Upcountry leaves w/ a 1.5" shackle. No sway. Felt like death.

Not the best idea, but I have been running one or none for about 3 years now. I have 5.5" RE lift with tera-flex shackles in the rear, ran my 8.25 welded and now my 8.8 with Lock Right with no issue.

Just need to be aware on the street, take it easy for a bit till you get the feel down. Watch for rough roads, especially in corners, as the rear will have a tendency to chatter and redirect ya if your not mindful of it.

Main issue I think, my 2 cents, is getting used to it and adapting your driving style to it. Oh and make sure your bump stops are in tact if you're going to wheel it as it will bottom out if you carry any weight in the rear.

If you can't afford shocks, don't lift your Jeep. Wheel it stock with cheapo stock shocks.

Or hell, lift it and run stock shocks or stock takeoffs from larger vehicles being lifted.

I'm still running stock shocks on the front at 3.5". Does it limit my downtravel and beat the crap out of my shocks? Most definitely. I don't care, they are 20 dollar shocks and haven't gotten me stuck yet, and I doubt they will. Do they keep the vehicle under control, as a trail rider and very mild crawler? Yes. No way in hell would I do go-fast stuff with them of course. A lot of you socal guys forget we don't have that kind of terrain everywhere, I think. Still absolutely no excuse to run no shocks or no shocks on the street.

for these who either didn't or haven't read the original post;

Well i have not installed my new rear shocks yet. I am going to try and get them installed before we leave but its not looking like i will. can i do any damage not having any rear shocks?

at what point did $$ get brought up?
who said anything about wanting to run without shocks for extended periods of time?
and when did the OP loose the front shocks too?

OP hadn't installed rear shocks yet (post lift I presume?)
OP wants to (will try too) get them installed before leaving (brought up later leaving for a wheeling trip)
OP asks if damage MAY occur without rear shocks
OP took advice, shocks WERE isntalled

why all the continuos cry-baby BS about "your trash if..." "you should be ashamed if..."
