Yes that is a BPE. Your options are to cut the bar pin out of your new shock and put the BPE in the new shock, or bolt the new shock up and ditch the BPE altogether.

Well i have not installed my new rear shocks yet. I am going to try and get them installed before we leave but its not looking like i will. can i do any damage not having any rear shocks?

Let me answer you question.
You will not damage anything when driving without shocks.

However, driving on the road my be unsafe.

I have driven without shocks before, it drove OK and felt safe, but my suspension was also brand new.

I'd go with the first option, bar pins blow

If wheeling in Moab, I'd imagine having both shocks back there would be a good idea. Part of the rear shocks' job is to help control axle wrap. Moab slickrock has large amounts of traction and can help bring out any weaknesses in your XJ. Fix it, do it right.

Begster, I drove my XJ with two shocks for 3 days. One front and one rear. It sucked when making turns, hitting bumps, etc. I had to drive it home with both front shocks but missing one rear, and there was a definite difference. I'm with Jim, if you say there's very little or no difference, you need to pay better attn to your rig and how it handles. If it sways your opinion at all, I've owned mine for over 6 yrs, which beats your 5 yrs. ;)

ok so i know i have to punch out that little pin on the BPE. i have wasted four penny nails trying to do so. whats the secret to getting that thing out? and can i buy new pins at the auto store?

I have noticed a lot more wrap with out the shocks. Its good to know that i was right for the reason in this.

Its settled these things are going on before MOAB!

they are but one side has a pin and the other has no hole at all the pin must be installed when they are put on so i assume it must come out to remove the BPE from the old shock.

I drove with one rear shock for a while and it was noticeable, but not intolerable. Then I did a single 45 minute drive with no rear shocks and I felt like I was going to bounce ass over teakettle. It's doable, but not good for the car, safe, or easy to drive.

I drove an XJ with 5.5" lift on long arms with no rear shocks because they ripped out. Drove it off road, on road everything.

Front shocks are more important because of the springs.

Could I tell the difference, a little, not that much though.

fwiw I also didn't have a sway bar either. But that xj was a POS and I don't have it anymore.

This shouldn't be in modified tech, it should be in stupid question tech
:roflmao:
now for my opinion, no shocks isnt the best thing to do. I have one rear shock. i have driven with no shocks a few times, in fact, the last time was all this week, until yesterday. there is a noticable difference. If you have the shocks just put them on, its a 5 min deal. if you dont have them then just drive a little bit more cautious to begin with until you realize how YOURE jeep handles with no rear shocks. thats it.

hey guys lets all chill out. i think we get the picture of its all about who is driving and the specific rig. personally i dont like the idea of hopping down the road all the time or the chance of major axle wrap due to no shocks. I do not know the specifics of suspensions or what all is REQUIRED to make it all function within normal and ideal specifications.

thank you i am installing the shocks as soon as i can get the darn pin on the BPE out.

Suspension engineers must be on to something since everything comes with socks. ;)

Although I agree that it is not a good idea to run without rear shocks I think the level of danger depends on what leafs you are running. As we have had people report already some notice little difference while others said it felt very unsafe. I imagine depending on your setup you could be either fine or a rolling death trap. Either way unless you like a good game of Russian Roulette I reccomend getting those shocks in instead of trying your luck.

coming from experience, I myself currently have no shocks in the rear... ever dip and bump in the road you will feel and tires in the rear may hop.. I have it chopped with nothing but a empty gas tank in the rear.. it hopped the first time and scared the crap out of me.. NO A GOOD IDEA!!! Its now in the drive and has been for a year.. trying to find a front 44 and then she'll be up again WITH SHOCKS!!!
