Nitrous?

Just wondering if anyone here is armed with nitrous and what kind of gain your getting out of it. Please don't refer to is as "Noss" either, (Thats why I walked out of Fast and Furious..)
Also what kit and company did you choose. The sneaky pete kit by
NOS loks pretty enticing....

No2 in an XJ? Please invite me over to watch as you shift to 4L and boost it for a 4 tire smoke-fest.

dude my bro ran NOS in his "6" (MX-6)! went from a 15.1 to a 14.4!! fricken awesome DUDE!! u should run NOS it is PHAT!

As cool as noss is (sorry, I couldn't help it! that's one of the worst slang terms I have ever heard - and I work with teens for a living...though not at the moment...<grrr>) it's not worth it IMHO unless you are professionally drag racing. The damage it can do to your engine is just not worth a little temporary boost in power. Though my high school science teacher did tell me a great story about it that I can't help but tell...

when my science teacher was either in high school or college he had a friend who's dad was a dentist. Dentists use alot of NO2... so one night he broke into his dad's office and stole one of the huge compressed NO2 tanks and "installed" it in the back of his Pinto (or some kind of little junk car) He rigged up a nozzle inside the air filter to spray it directly into the carb. Then he rigged up a little valve (like on a water spiget) next to the drivers seat. So the story goes... he would get up to about 50-60 mph and spin open that valve and floor it - and the tires would light up, even at 60 mph! Of course, the story ends with a melted engine after a couple of tries and an angry dentist, but I bet it was quite a show to see that little junker smoke the tires! the end.

its N2O , but whos counting.
I have been running a Nitrous Express 150hp kit in my LT1 ImpalaSS for about 3 years now with about 40k. My motor has 125k on it too.
If you run it under Ideal conditions, get a kit thats smart enough to know when its lean and dont be an idiot with it(read: every stoplight in Midday July) It can be a safe system.
My 4300lb car ran a 12.9@109mph and did 515ft/lbs at the wheels on a 100shot, headers and a few other mods
So yeah you can get sick gains from it, but the strain on your jeep will be a lot. XJGUYs lowered jeep would be about the only application I would run it. At any rest, you can gun it and see your tailights passing you. its not safe for lifted vehicles and it wont get you anything but towed on the trail.
thats at least a nickel's worth of my opinion

I am almost finished my nitrous install in my XJ. I plan to run at around 75 shot for starters but I am planning on using it for strip use not street. A Cherokee makes a very nice "sleeper" and mine being 2 door and 2 wd it's probably one of the lighter XJs out there. I am installing a NOS 10 lb. bottle and have pressure gauge mounted on the dash, my center console has 3 switches mounted, (arm, bottle heater, and purge). I am still talking to a couple of speed shops as well as guys I know that drag with professional cars to find out whether I should go with an activation switch that automatically kicks in at WOT or if I want to hook up a couple of buttons on the steering wheel that will activate them. I just sold one of my boats, so now that is no longer a project I can focus my efforts into the Jeep.

thanks,
Jamie

I sure hope you have some sort of retard for the ignition..and nitrous does not take kindly to being activated other than at wide open throttle. You also need a low fuel pressure safety that will prevent activation if the fuel pressure is too low...curious if you have a plate system or foggers?? Foggers are by far the way to go...no worries about proper distribution..also you can save money by getting a 50 or 100 lb cylinder and use it to cross-fill your bottle(s). It's generally less than $2.00 a lb that way...And I hope you or someone you know is very good at reading plugs. An RPM window controller would be nice in case you break the drivetrain...i never saw a rev limiter fast enough to contain a nitrous motor under no load...there is one curious benefit though...the valves will seal better because there will be no deposits left between the valves and seats...good luck!!

My ignition isnt retarded and Ive run as big as a 150 shot.
its all about the fuel pressure switch and the MSD 6AL, Also foggers use the factory injectors right? My system is dry and didnt require me to add a larger fuel pump and it doesnt wear on the injectors.
I use the test port on my motorfor supplemental fuel and "dry" shoot it into the intake. Only issue I have is MPFI manifolds arent designed to flow fuel, so after a pass, it may backfire since fuel and nitrous have pooled in the manifold valley. Just a quick rev after the pass and it clears up. But my Fuel system is 100% stock. BTW expect your check engine light to come on if you have OBDII.

Cool Owl..I hadn't considered the dry systems. As for the foggers, they are individually fitted into each intake runner. Both fuel and liquid nitrous are injected. They are tuned by exchanging jets of various orifice sizes..as for the timing retard, flame propogation is much faster in a nitrous motor. One advantage for Jeep owners that have the Motorcraft based ignition is there is a retard feature built in to assist starting...this could be activated along with the nitrous system to provide retard.

I have thought about adding it to the old LT1 in the jeep. I have looked at it two ways, I can do it now and finish off the motor, or I can wait until I can build the motor to handle it better. I don't imagine my 170,000 mile LT1 would be happy about a 100 shot. But the darn thing is still strong and would probably handle it. Nitrous kits have come a long way from the standard foggers. Now you have companies like venom and ZEx, among all of the originals creating more technological systems. If anything knowing that that bottle is back there has to make you laugh. Pun intended.
