News year day at Redbird

About 20 or so of my local club went to Redbird for our annual Hangover run and Chile cookoff. We had a blast untill Trail 21 bite us in the behind. We had 7 vehicles on 21 when we came to THE HILL or should I asy THE TREE. The Exploder was the first to hit it, trying for all he could to turn but to no avail. The XJ was next, he locked up the brakes from the top ( rookie mistake ). He slide sidways and hit it with his left rear wheel. The TJ was last, he hit the tree head on at about 20 mph. Rock the heck out of him and he was still sore today.http:// http:// http://
Somone is going to have to cut them down!!!

We still had fun thou and drove everything home or to their trailers.
 
Zuki apparently you haven't run trail 21. We are not the only ones on NAXJA who have contacted that tree. Steep down hill, tree at the bottom with no run off area.

Saw most of you guys at the beginning of Trail 1, but we split off and hit 14. Sucks that you all hit the tree, it's in a bad place. Chili was good, thanks to all who prepared it.

Conditions were excellent, it's only better in early summer when it is totally dry and warm.

Right on the money, I have never been to Redbird. Maybe someday. I usually get to the Badlands, then stop.

I'm sorry my question took the form of sarcasm, they often do :banghead:. I was wondering though why this obstical was a problem. Was / is there a soil problem (loose, wet, frozen) that added to the obvious danger of that obstical (tree impact). I've been on some nastry downhills, but nothing I've been on, including the ones that ended in air, ever took out so many Jeeps at one time, so I'm just curious.

Sorry 'bout the Jeeps BTW, esp the guy who hit it at speed!

Nope nope did not take it sarcasm. I dont know what it is about the ground there but it is like "icephalt". I really wish some one would put an angle finder or what ever it is called on the slope.
The crew from Naxja that did the clean up at Redbird trail 21 had a heck of time when they were there. They even said next time there they needed to cut those 2 trees down to give you some run off area. Maybe some of the folks who worked the cleanup will jump in here with more pics of that spot.

Heh, that day we were more about getting the heck off that trail than taking pictures of it.

I hate that hill; it seems like the back end is going to come over the front every time you start the descent. I have tried staying off the brakes and letting the gears take over, but you still scream down the hill much faster than is comfortable. (even with a 4:1 t'case and 4.88s)
 
I feel those guy's pain! Sorry to hear that those damned trees are still causing so much damage.

I'll have my saw the next time I go ... there's a debt to pay AFAIC.

That guy with the maroon XJ in the second pic is from columbus. I see that thing all the time is he on NAXJA? I also vote for those trees to be cut down it was dry enough when i was there that no one hit them!

Those pine needles are like roller bearings too...
 
Looking at the picture.... Which trees??? The two that look like problem children are the one with the trail marker sign and the one at the bottom where you would be head on with it coming down the hill...
 
LOL, that hill isn't bad, well other than the pine needle roller bearings, but slope and length are nothing compared to some of the hills in the Pocono Mountains I have gone down. When I got to the top of one someone towards the front of 30+ trucks gets on the radio and says "everyone lookout, he has no brakes and should have gone first". Funny, as I looked down at that line of trucks I was thinking the same thing :) I had a 6400lb Blazer, I got down OK but passed 15 of the other ttrucks trying to get stopped and that was in 4 low, and one ride I won't soon forget as it was over a 1/4 mile and felt like you were looking straight down til you hit the bottom.

Glad no one got hurt by those trees, I agree, they probably need to go.

Ask Les about that hill when its sloppy. I was afraid i would take my mirror off going down it when it was dry! I couldn't imagine going down a hill 1/4 mile long! :shiver:
 
lol, no guts no glory :laugh2: That hill didn't bother near as much as the little tiny path between two quarries. It had a 100' drop on each side and most of the time your tires are sticking over the edge on both sides, not for everyone. You have to have someone walk in front of you and guide you, it's straight down on both sides and you can't see the path at all in a big truck .

Ask Les about that hill when its sloppy. I was afraid i would take my mirror off going down it when it was dry! I couldn't imagine going down a hill 1/4 mile long! :shiver:

Yikes it would suck to lock up your brakes on that! That would probably be the last time you did it!
 
You don't go fast enough to use your brakes on that path, if you go over 5mph you probably won't make it to the other side. I'm guessing but it's probably 200 yards from one side to the other. I wouldn't do it now with my heart!
