Newer Interior in an older XJ

Hey, I was tipped off that there are few members running around with the 97+ door panels in their pre 97 XJs, as well as someone running a whole dash. I was wondering if you guys are out there if you could maybe post some pictures and say what kind of modification went into this. Thanks
DJ

I haven't done it, but no mods are necessary for the door panels. The new doors are the same as the old doors. As to the dash, as long as you have electronic istruments I believe it's a straight exchange, but not 100% certain of that. Physically it's a straight swap but not sure if wiring connectors are all the same.

That's somewhat true, but there are some differences. The newer plastic door panels have the door lock and opening lever set in a different spot. They are located further towards the rear of the car, then the old ones. Also the inside door handles are different. The older handles are longer and attach to the door itself, the newer handles attach to the door panel, not the door.
You'll have to cut the door in order to make the door lock and opening lever fit. You'll also need to get the inner door locking and opening rods from the newer doors. They are shorter than the older because of the different location of the lock and lever. The door handle mechanism, however is the same for all years, so no swap needed.
I pulled four panels from a '99, I'll be cutting my '93's doors pretty soon, so I'll post pictures of the conversion.
I've also looked into the dash replacement. It appears that the mounting is the same, but I didn't get measurements, I just looked at both older and newer dashes. The eyes can be deceived, so...

There are two many differences to get into. Basically the 97-01 XJ's have a instrument cluster that gets information over a data buss from the engine controller for speed, RPM's, battery voltage, and engine temp. Anything is possible but it would be a PITA. There are probably other differences but that should be enough for most to realize it's not worth it.

Could you cut out and frankenstein the gauges and speedo of an older gauge cluster and insert them into a newer dash, probably covering up the damage with one of those white overlays off of Ebay. What about calibration? Do the needles move the same rate?

Any pics yet? Im thinking that I can let my exterior go to crap (rock/branch rash) and have a nice modern interior ala the SNL skit for the "chameleon"...

Anything is possible if you are willing to do what it takes, but I wouldn't mess with it personally.

The only place I've seen this conversion is in the XJ's from China. They have the old gauge cluster in the new dash and also the old slide style hvac controls instead of knobs in the newer center dash console.

Too much work if you ask me. I think it'd be much easier to swap all your parts onto a newer XJ.

Hey, Todd --

Where did you get those pics of the Beijing Jeep interior? Do you have any others? I didn't see those pics on their web site. However, I did see a reference to the fact that their catalytic converter is US-spec. That just gets me wondering all over again how hard it might be to bring a few of those over here. If they also have US-spec air bags and side door protection, seems like it should be a slam dunk.

One is assuming the gauges are hard wired like the 84-96 XJ but that might not be the case. I wonder why it appears the fuel and voltage gauge are not indicating in that photo.

I highly doubt ANY of it is compatible... just interesting to see the old STYLE mixed in with the new.
Note the LCD odometer vs our LED or older analog. The needles do appear to be the floating type on the 97+.
