For the last few years now I've been wanting to learn how to weld. Last night I got a screaming deal ( at least I think so) for a lincoln 110 quickweld. I know I'm not going to be welding up bumpers or cages but at least I can learn the basics. Anybody got any tips?

I don't have any experience with this particular machine. I'm a full time welder adn I work with mid sized Millermatics (210, 212, 251, & 252s) I am currently taking a basic welding course at my local community college and have learned quite a bit of info that is quite helpful. I am for the most part self taught tho. Just practice practice practice or pick up some books.

the way i learned was getting a bunch of small scrap from my dads steel shop and just welding them together. then i took a welding class at vincennes.

just keep practicing til you think you got the hang of it. then practice some more. then when you think you are really good... keep practicing.

not sure if anyone has mentioned practice....but practice. After you learn to weld witha small welder like that and you use a bigger unit that has gas shielding you will be like "Damn! my welds look sweet!" I spent year stick welding and then learned with a small 110 wire unit w/o gas...when I bought my Hobart 187 w/ gas...holy chit, my welds not only look great, they have great penetration and hold outstandingly. I welded the hitch back on a old hay trailer and it put it to the test w/ 10 bales that were 2000# or more each. No more booger welds...

penetration. giggidy
