I think it is great that they are building that car, and testing it like that. Is it a Jeep? nope, but it has a market for sure. I bet they had fun testing it too.
As to why people would need or want a 4x4 car or station wagon? The needs vary. VW and other manufactures have been building them for awhile.
When I lived in Germany, I had no real need for a Jeep, was in to Go Fast cars then.
VW was making a Golf Country.. 4X4, lifted, some sort of subframe... they where cool, and I wanted one.
I eventually had a used MB wagon. It was 4 wheel drive, and was great for get-aways to go fishing etc... as well as frequent winter trips to Garmisch, and Innsbruck.
Rubicon or Moab? naw, I would not have even thought about it.
Fun cars though.... but certainly not a Jeep.
