New Tow Rig???

rather i should say, you would never pass a normal inspection...ny state is tough for diesel converted vehicles. unless you know someone who will do the inspection for you

i say this because i'm about to do a diesel conversion in a truck (i've been trying for the last 2 years) and i am sticking with a vehicle that is over 26 years old so it doesn't need an emissions inspection

According to the VIN it's a gas truck and as long as there isn't a CEL it'll pass.

the problem is that if you go to the wrong station they could inspect it based on the year of the motor. some 12v's were non obd, some were obd 1 and some were obd 2. you could have to pass a sniff test depending on the year.

personally i think its sexy as hell and if i had some money to pick up an already converted one, i would love to. just call around and make sure you know what to expect before you buy it. it would suck to drive it halfway across the country and not be able to get it road legal here

No matter how cool the truck may be, and how nice it would be to have a tow rig again, I don't think it's a good idea. You just blew through a ton of money on our trip, you don't have a job right now, i assume you're making payments on the Fiesta, and you have a wedding coming up. It's probably a good idea to cool off on the Jeep money you spend for a while, at least until you make sure you're stable again. You can always use RJ's truck to tow your shit once it's fixed, which is also going to cost a good deal of money to do right. On top of all that, you have no idea how well the swap was done, it could seem great at first then fall apart on you and leave you in the same spot you're in now. Not trying to be a downer, just trying to be reasonable.

Pat just dropped a ton of common sense in here. I do agree with him, I also think $7k is a little over priced. Hell, think of it this way, you could buy a nice burn with a blown up motor for $700 and a donor 2nd gen CTD truck for ~$2k. Even with doing the swap and stuff, you could be into it for like $4k I bet.

Given what Pat said.....lots of common sense in the little drunk fella apparently. Ship your shit back home and deal with your other stuff. If you choose not to heed his advice, I got a couch for you to crash on in Indiana.

I have yet to deal with the actual seller. Iv been talking to the guy who is going to ship my jeep home. his buddy is selling it. those were the only pics he had. he gave me the sellers number today.

and I hear you pat. Im trying to look at this as my silver lining. I get a sweet diesel tow rig thats more practical. as it it can do pick up and minivan stuff.

heres the motor pics

I think it looks pretty clean.

Idk what that twisted up bunch of wires are for.

and Ross have you seen my jeep? I can only imagine how poorly I could make a Cummins swap happen in my burb.

alt I did briefly think about inspection for NYS. I have someone I know do all mine, that being said he plugs all my stuff in in order to pass. so as long as there is no CEL I should be ok.

ask for a video of it idling, revving it up etc. then a video of driving, hard accel from inside viewing the gauges from a stop, and hard accel from 40-70 viewing the same.

I have to agree with Pat at least somewhat... that swap looks reasonably clean though. Not perfect, but decent.

I would want to hear it run, check oil pressure, romp on it a bit, see paperwork on the trans build and engine work if any, etc etc. And I'd still be pretty worried about driving it back cross country...

So i had a long talk with my mechanic. Tring to figure out what it would cost for a new motor and options like that and it turns out his friend rebuilds all the bigblocks for alot of the guys at the local dirt track. So he sugested that i have it shipped home pull the motor and have his buddy just rebuild it.

So i think thats what im goi g to do.
