I recommend starting small, learning the limits of your vehicle, and then adding things that will improve it, without spending too much on things you think you'll probably replace with something better in the future. You'll learn a lot more wheeling technique by doing that than by simply going big from the start and being able to clear whatever obstacle you want with 40s and lockers front and rear.
 
I think it was Casey Currie who said that he would probably struggle to wheel a modified Jeep effectively as he started out with and has always wheeled comp buggies.
