New to Colorado/Denver. Emissions?

Hello all. I just moved here from Omaha Nebraska about a week ago and am excited to get out and on some trails. My wife and I are living in an apt for awhile as we get used to the area and the plan to buy a place eventually.

Anyway, I've got a black 99 running about 4" lift and 31's. I've still got Nebraska plates so wave if you see me out and about.

I am wondering if you guys can give me a little insight into emissions inspections. It's not something we have to worry about in Ne... I've got a newer cat back but original cats, O2 sensors, and a cracked manifold. Would it be a waste of time/money to try and pass?

I've been planning to buy an APN header for a few years now. I'll probably have to suck it and order one soon.

I would at least replace the O2 Sensors before doing a test.

Unless the header crack his really big...... it'll likely pass fine. They don't inspect the header for cracks, and it'd take a huge crack to affect the emissions enough to fail given all other mechanical aspects of the engine are in working order.

The test is $25 and if it fails, you get a free re-test after repairs. Tire size on lifted vehicles has always been a problem. Colorado Air Care limits tire size to 33" but even then the tread design of the tire leaves the decision totally at their discretion. Mud tires with large side lugs generally are what get declined. A typical 31" mud tire will/should be fine...... They really don't like Super Swampers, Pit Bull, or tires of that sort.

It's generally a good idea to replace the air filter, change the oil and if it's been a while, a set of plugs, before an e-test. A good running '99 XJ should pass with flying colors. Not necessary to change the O2 sensors unless you've got an engine that's running bad, or a check engine light with a code indicating an issue with the sensors.

Tires are Duratracs so not to aggressive. I didn't know they even looked at that sort of thing.

Yeah, emissions testing is done on a roller-dyno for "real time" engine load type of emissions readings. The dynos have these safety guides with rollers that move in close to the rear tires on the dyno to keep the car from wandering side to side and the large lugs are a safety issue as they can grab the safety guides and make the car hop off the dyno.

Duratracs should be no problem. :thumbup:

...and buy a new gas cap. The last thing they do is pressure test the cap. If it fails, you start back at square one.

Depends where you live. The EPA requires it based on the county's overall emissions.

If your vehicle is in good running condition, and has all the required smog equipment, it's prettty much a cake walk.

if i had 33's and a stock air box still, my jeep would pass.

Stock airbox is not necessary, David's xj has a open cone filter. They didn't give it a second look. They also were ok with 35's on the front and 29's on the rear.
