New Jeeper in the crowd.

Offroadfun

Hey all. Just picked up a '01 XJ for cheap. Needs a little work and a title. Looking forward to building it up with some help from this site. This is my first Jeep. I've had other off-road vehicles and decided to join the Jeep crowd. Oh, if anyone can help me with info on the best way to get a title, I would surely appreciate it. I would post pics but don't know how to yet.

Did the previous owner specify they lost the title? What kind of work does it need? Like body or front end work? Could he have a salvage title after totaling it and just not specified that?

Previous owner put it in the ditch and bent the lower control arm bracket on the diff. He sold it as a parts car because he says he doesn't want it on the road. He's kind of out there in la-la land. I don't think he reported it to his insurance company so it shouldn't have a salvage title. I was going to part it out anyway and it didn't matter. But when I got it and started looking at it, I decided to keep it. Went to the DMV and got a bonding packet. Hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a pain. I'm thinking that someone with a towing company can help me out somehow with a towing lien sale or something like that.

The risky part about buying a vehicle without title is that you might have purchased the previous owner's troubles..... believe it or not, there are vehicles as old as yours that can still have un-settled liens on them. The only way to get a title on those kinds of vehicles is to get a letter from the lien holder that states they no longer have interest in the vehicle and release the lien, or you'll have to financially settle the lien.

And just so other readers know...... using a towing company to get a title is actually illegal. Both for you and the towing company. They can't solicit that kind of service, nor are they allowed to per their state licensing. It definitely is the easy way to get a title in 30 days....... but the risks are high. Especially if the tow company decides they like your jeep and keep it. Ain't nothing you can do.

There is a recently discovered loophole that for all intents and purposes is legal. Note: This is for cars 15 years old or older.

I've not tried it, but I'm seriously considering it for a '67 Olds Cutlass I recently snatched up that has a title error that Colorado refuses to correct without submitting a full title application process. (VIN number on the last owner's title is missing a digit).

I am going to try that work around as I am struggling to keep contact and motivate a person who last registered (parts car that got handed around) to file for a new tittle and transfer it to me.

Thank you. Hey Hypoid, is your name Mike? I think I remember wheeling with you and others from another forum. Maybe RMFTC? Do you remember a Shawn with a custom ranger or Brodi with a Toyota truck?

Guilty on all counts, maybe. :D

I never ran a trail with Brody, but Sean and I have done a bit of sight-seeing in the mountains.

What trail did we run together?

Last I heard, all your discretionary income was tied up in a boat. Did you sell that Bronco that you built?

That's right. Jenny Creek. Yeah, sold the Bronco. Still have a boat. Now I picked up this Cherokee. I can't believe it's been almost 8 years since we did the trail. Wow, time flies. Is Sean still around?
