New Jeep Renegade

Body styles change curves change.
Should I be upset that the new mustang doesn't look like my 25 year old fox?

The Cherokee body was designed 30 years ago do you really expect it to have the same lines? They kept it for almost 20 years longer than most other vehicles.

Preach.

I grew up with hot rods, my Dad owned a 69 Camaro, I love the new Camaro. My favorite Vette is the 63, but I like the new Vette also.

My love affair for Jeeps started at a dealership in Colorado in 1972, when my Dad took me with him and we test drove a CJ-5, but I think the JK is a great looking rig and will likely own one someday in the not too distant future.

Yup, Fiat just took it to a whole nutha level.......of meeeeh.

JK is to CJ as C2 vette is to C7 vette.

I think the new Renegade does a hell of a lot more justice to the jeep name than the Sonic or new impala/Malibu do to Chevy name.

We all have our favourite older cars, but Chrysler is in the business of making money. They're bound by customer demand for comfort, fuel economy, safety demands AND competition from other brands.

Also, I think you're purposely belly-aching because Fiat's Italian. Patriotism and nostalgia can only take you so far in any debate. Quite frankly, the Renegade doesn't seem so bad; it's quite innovative for its segment (much like the XJ was in the early 80s). I would really rather Chrysler gave it the Cherokee badge instead.

You make too many assumptions......as usual. We shall see if the Chrysler/Fiat gamble pays off. I do agree that the Cherokee name would have been much more fitting on the Renegade......but it's still in the meeeh catagory.

What assumptions did I make exactly? You complained about FIAT twice in this thread.

Moreso, if you don't like it than you don't have to buy it. I despise the 2014 Cherokee, I wouldn't be caught dead behind the wheel of one. It looks worst in person than any photos I've seen of it online. The Renegade interests me, and I'm looking forward to see one in person.

Gamble? From a business standpoint, it's the best thing to happen to jeep since the XJ.

I'm obliged to agree. There's plenty opportunity for the Renegade. It's compact and -most likely- fuel efficient which will appeal to young and old drivers alike (think Honda Element - it was intended for young drivers, but it attracted its fair share of older folks too). Mopar already has a cat-back, intake and lowered suspension, and I've seen some impressive, third-party, turbo upgrades for the 1.4L multiair, so there's a market for the tuner crowd. If they expand the diesel engine option to the north american market along with some lift kits than it might even appeal to a few naxja owners too.

Again, it is a bit on the cute side from an appearance standpoint, and we don't have all the numbers yet (curb weight, epa numbers, crash test figures), but so far.. all signs point to this being a successful model for Jeep (heck, it can't be any crummier than the Compass/Patriot).

Um, the XJ was the original car-ifcation of the jeep product. It was a car with truck axles. that's why we like it.

car-ification of the Jeep product

Actually, if we are talking car-ification, then it would be the Commando (C-101 and C-104). Since the original Jeepster was a 2wd car, then they added Jeep/truck axles to it.

Or should we mention the Wagoneer? A station wagon on a 4x4 frame, and the first Jeep to sport IFS.

2012 GC sales 154,734 units
2012 Wrangler sales 141,669 units
2012 Liberty sales 75,483 units
2012 Patriot sales 62,010 units
2012 Compass sales 40,235 units

In 2000, with only the XJ and ZJ as Jeep's SUV products, they sold 498,048 units. (Wrangler excluded)

In 2007, before the market took a dump, Jeep had 5 "SUV" models and they sold 465,597 units. (Wrangler excluded)

One could deduce that if you sell fewer units while manufacturing 5 unique products, than you did while manufacturing 2 unique products, then your business is losing money and there is a low demand for some of your products. (Enter the US Federal Government to save the day with taxpayer funds)

Saying goodbye to the Compass, Patriot, Commander and arguably, the Liberty were great business decisions. Replacing them with more cars could be the answer, or a repeat of the above........time will tell.

PS, I don't hate Fiat....or Italians.

I would love to see a Cherokee/grand/wrangler only model occur again, with a focus on a cherokee rubicon version, and a wrangler truck version.

That being said, as things are now,
that renegade will be sick if they do a jeepster version with removable top and straight axles. that would be pretty awesome.

The current path that is being followed will completely remove solid axles from the Jeep lineup. Federal government mandated fuel efficiency requirements are a large part of this, as solid axles and frame/body rigs weigh more and thus, consume more fuel than a similarly sized unibody IFS/IRS rigs.

Here's a great summary on the Renegade by Christian Hazel-JP Magazine

"So yes, the 2015 Jeep Renegade is small. The Jeep Renegade is cute. The Jeep Renegade lacks a real low range and isn’t going to be as off-road-capable as the Jeep JK Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, or even KL Cherokee. But Jeep already owns off-road-capable with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Wrangler Moab, and plain old Wrangler. And it has the off-road luxury segment sewn up with the excellent Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. Heck, even the Cherokee Trailhawk is the most off-road capable vehicle in its class. What it didn’t already have is what the Jeep Renegade is: a small, highly economical, easy to maneuver and park, affordable alternative to the cute utes sold worldwide.

And when you stack the new 2015 Jeep Renegade up against the other platforms in its class like the Nissan Juke or Kia Soul, the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk’s 20:1 crawl ratio, 184hp 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder engine, red tow hooks, increased front and rear departure angles, and nice interior appointments, it’s really a pretty darn nice alternative in a class swimming in a sea of watered-down mediocrity."

Top of the class.....when the class is Mediocrity 301. :)

but... RED TOWHOOKS!!!!!!!!!!1
