Hello,
My parents named me William, but, I earned the nickname Doc while serving as a Combat Corpsman with the Marine Corps.

Growing up on the family dairy farm, we had an old ('53?) Willy's and a CJ-5 which we used to chase the cows around (when my Uncle wasn't looking). I came close to owning a Jeep several times but never quite got one.

This year, after coveting Jeeps most of my adult life, I finally was able to get one of my very own. Last month, I took ownership of a '99 XJ.
For now, it will have to be stock. It has to be my daily driver for a few years and I'm suffering from that common ailment funds-r-low. I hope to get a mild lift (3-4 inches) and some beefier tires under it in the next couple years.

My previous steed was a 1990 Blazer 5.7L- 4 Speed- with a 6" Skyjacker kit and 34's.

I did some offroading with the 'Zer but nothing extreme. Mostly used it to get to fishing spots "off the beaten path" so to speak.

I live in Southeastern NY 'bout 70 miles northwest of NYC.
I'm a Lieutenant in the fire department here and my Bride (Lisa) is a Chemist with IBM. We are child free, but raise and train Australian Sheperds.

When I'm not running into burning buildings, I build scale models, build and run RC Cars and fly RC airplanes. I also do a bit of fishin' now and then.

I guess I'm done rambling for now.

Thanks,

Doc Wiseman

Welcome, Doc --

You're in the right chapter. I'm chapter President until the end of this year, and although I did buy a Comanche with a modest lift (which I don't like), my Cherokees are all at stock height and will likely remain there. At the other end of the spectrum, we have some lads with VERY large XJs. So whatever height you decide to aim for, you'll be able to find advice here.

We have activities in PA (Paragon, south of Scranton), NJ (Pine Barrens), and Massachusetts (Western, near North Adams). We are also seeking places to run in NY state, so if you know of legal trails in your area we'd like to hear about them. In choosing locations and setting up trail choices, I'm always reminding people not to forget the stock vehicles, so don't feel you can't run unless you have a lift.

welcome doc first id like to say thanks for your service to this country. now that said i would like to tell you that the xj is a very capable rig stock so dont be afraid to take it off the beaten path and see what it can do, from thare you can decide what mods you need for your type of driving . and if you have any ? this is the place to get answers . welcome to the wonderful world of jeeps

I have a good handle on the whereabouts of those places.
Mom's Family is from Honesdale, PA and my Brides Grandparents are in Frakville, I spend a fair amount of time in Eastern PA. Scranton is about 90 minutes from me.
I was in a Reserve unit in Pittsfield MA so I'm familiar with North Adams.

Southern Jersey is usually a 70 MPH blur out the window on my annual pilgramage to Aberdeen and the Proving grounds.

There is very little open space near me and virtually none open to motorized vehicles. I recall some trails in the Southern Catskills and the 'Gunks but I haven't been up there in years. There used to be some trails in the Adirondacks as well but I expect they've all gone away too.

Thanks for the welcome,
Doc

Is that so? Well, Newburgh and 9W have similar out of sight - out of mind characteristics on my way back and forth to VT!!! :D

Seriously, glad to have you here as well. I have to echo what the others have said, your '99 will bring you to "interesting" places, regardless of how much, or how little, you modify her. This rig is the best "off the assembly line", versatile, practical, and affordable 4x4 that's ever been produced. While Eagle teases me about going to the "dark side" with my Red '92 (the rest of mine are stock) - first time I was in Moab with her, she was on 235's and a negative lift!

And, you can't beat this place for honest opinion and help.

I also extend a hearty welcome to a fellow lieutenant in the fire service. (Although I'm sure you're much, much, more useful as a structural FF - this is my second time through the officer ranks. Shortage of volunteers means that even ex-Chiefs have to recycle and not just fade away).

Look forward to riding with you someday, in NY or elsewhere - keep in mind that Paragon isn't terribly far for you - just hop on I84 into Pennsy - it's about 45 mins south on I81. And another great park is at Rausch Creek, just a little bit further south from Frackville.

Welcome aboard.

Nobody actually WANTS to stop in Newburgh unless their life insurance is paid up and their Body Armor is Fresh. I've worked here more than 10 years and just when I think I've seen it all, somebody comes up with something new to surprise me. This place is about a 9.6 on the "strange-o-meter". :D

So Doc, what kinda RC cars U running?
Right now I have a Buggy that I built myself and I'm SLOWLY building myself a new Monster Truck based on the HPI Savage chassis. I used to work in an RC shop building/rebuilding cars and Trucks. The guy who ran the shop "paid" me in store credit and I got to buy my stuff at his cost plus shipping. The guy folded up and retired to someplace warmer last fall so I'm looking for a new toy shop.
While I was there, I built mostly nitro touring cars 'cause that is the play toy of choice for our local population. I did build a sweet 4X4 with a remote starter on a .26, tricked out suspension with 8 gas shocks, carbon fiber everywhere possible, and a 41 Willy's Coupe body. Guy paid me almost a grand for it. I was sorry to see it go.

Wow sounds like you had/ still have some sweet cars. I dont have any working ones left I used to race Bolink Legends, because they are CHEAP, but as of right now the only thing I have left is my Thunderking and its in the process of being repaired when funds allow.

again welcome doc,
