After having these lay around the house for a year I finally got off my lazy butt and installed them this past weekend. Maybe I can get the sending units installed this week.

Think I may use the blue backlights instead of the red. Definitely going to have to wire them to the dimmer switch for the rest of the console gauges.
They're "Phantom" gauges by Auto Meter.

Yeah, it's just a colored rubber cup that goes over the clear bulb. They just came with red and green. I'm sure you can find other colors somewhere. We have old control panels at work that used similar cups on the indicator lights. (yellow, orange, etc.) I think if I left just the clear bulb it would be somewhat distracting at night. Even with the dimmer switch wired in. I don't know, I'll have to see.

Wow thats really nice looking.

Is that the gauge pod for the pre-97 xj's?

Not sure about that. Mine is a 2000. I think there was a different part # for the older model. I really don't remember it's been a while. You can check them out I guess. I bought them from Summit racing.

The sensor is brass and comes with 1/8" threads and a brass 1/8" to 1/4" threaded reducer. I think it's made so that you can weld/braze a bung to the oil pan and then just screw it into the bung. That way it is grounded through the engine. I think since I have already installed an engine oil cooler I will just splice into one of the hoses with a "T" fitting and attach it that way, but I will still have to ground it with a seperate wire. I'll probably do the same with the transmission cooler. I hope that makes sense.

You know I didn't look for any write ups, but there's got to be some out there.

Very nice! I've always wanted to do the same thing with mine....would be nice to know what temp the tranny is running at.
