New engine knocking... so blown.

Looked fine. Some light "scratches" if you wanna call them that, just like all the rest (minus scoring on number 5 rod). Nothing irregular like worn edges, signs of crank walk or out of balance etc.

Haven't had much time to mess around with the motor or investigate too much more, but it's coming back out. Soon. The noise is getting worse. Still goes away when rpm's are above 1500 or so, but it seems more apparent all the time now. Before when I started it dead cold, I would hear nothing. Now, even cold at 40-50psi oil pressure, I can still hear it. I'm leaning on something piston related. I can also hear a SLIGHT crankshaft noise, probably normal, but the original noise is twice the speed of the crank 'noise'. So I'm thinking it's something reciprocating.

What should I be looking for when I pull the head and pan off besides obvious chunks of metal, slivers, etc. Is there a way to actually test lifters and deem them good or not? how should the cylinder walls look, since the rings are now seated? Engine work has always made me nervous :(

Look at the bearings for wear, any scratches or anything like that. Piston skirts that look bad and like they made hard contact with the cylinder wall. Rotate it over before you take it apart to see if you can hear or feel anything.
