so billy was nice enough to weld up my new muffler and any cracks in the exhaust last week and wow what a difference in power in the 4runner. totally rad.
i also had a bad misfire. i think i found the problem, the gasket for the cold start injector was non existent and when i did the old spray carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks it died when i sprayed around the cold start injector. sure enough there was no gasket there at all, when i remember removing one, so i made one from some gasket material i had lying around, and sprayed again, and there ya go, no more dying or difference in idle, so i had a bad vacuum leak i guess.
i have replaced :
o2 sensor(gonna reinstall the newer denso one though since i know its not the problem)
cap, rotor, ignition coil, plugs, plug wires,
ground wires to engine from batt, batt to chassis and engine to chassis with like 0 guage wire
throttle cable
plenum gasket
TPS
cleaned out the plenum very thoroughly
coolant temp sensor
thermostat
battery terminal connections
changed oil, tranny fluid
checked timing, its good
checked compression its 150 +- 5 accross all 4
repaired leaky vacuum lines via electrial tape(plan to buy new ones, special ftted ones from toyota)
tested fuel injectors, they all tested within spec
pcv valve
have in the box waiting:
tranny solenoids and filter(same as aw4 surprisingly)
fuel filter
the thing is finally running as good as i think it will get for now.
it has enough power for at 309K, top end was supposedly rebuilt around 15K ago?
as for an XJ being gutlless, my xj on 4.88s and 35s hauls like crazy. fast as hell, i recently sea foamed it and then replaced the o2 sensor in prep to smog and it is running like a bad outta hell. i love driving it. on 35s it still out performs the 4runner on 30" a/ts by a long shot
