Just got finished escorting some indian developers we hired out the door AFTER wiping their laptops quick format with linux and reinstalling windows while they were at lunch. Found they had downloaded our entire software repository of source code when they were only allowed to be working in one area.
It comes in handy having a tall blond haired blue eyed norwegian who just happened to have been born and raised in India by her missionary parents, apparently they had loose lips conversing in indian and not knowing it was her main language besides english and norwegian.
I don't know whether she's more pissed they were stealing it to resell or now she's back to 4x the work till we can hire more, six weeks down the drain.

They were smug but I don't think they noticed the reinstalls yet :D :D :D I was suprised the discs worked after running that hand held deguasser over them for 5 min each.

Sweet. That's got to feel good. I didn't hit any traffic on my commute today because I spent hours getting a new wireless network going at home, made me about 2 1/2 hours late. Yeah, not really the same, is it?

No, the laptops only came in this morning with them, we got curious when they chose the laptops over the workstations which have 24"LCD's.
As for the law, nope, not worth it, I'll vette the applicants myself next time and screw PC correctness.

SCHWEET!!!!!!! You're a good deal nicer than I'd be, I'd be sorely tempted to have them busted for industrial espionage and theft.

Having a metric boatload of swarthy individuals of short stature at work right now, I *AM* gonna be passing this one on.

Block your outgoing ftp ports and log them for attempts, that was another nail in the coffin when my raptor started emailing me which it had never done before so I startled at first with a WTF is that... I just resubnetted, second subnet no longer goes out at all on any ports which will for sure screw up any developers who seem to use google to solve problems :D almost as much as me :D :D

Hey, Google is your friend.

Yea, but it's not supposed to be an adjunct programming course, we're not paying you to google, $hit, I can do that.

You were nice considering. I would have wiped them and left them that way.
Sometimes I feel more like a babysitter than an engineer. We have spent the last year locking down more and more because people can't control themselves. (and that is our employees) It sucks! I don't like being the IT Nazi!

Good thing you had someone who understood them!

Oh the irony. I'm reading this at work :D :D

I thought that everyone did this at work. :)

Yea, me too, in fact the first thing I do is make sure my system is ignored by the nanny stuff...

Nope, more correct is 'good thing I had someone who understood them and they didn't know I had someone who understood them' or I'd still be scratching my head... which is now a policy, she sees the advantages too.

Heh. *NOT* just FTP. More like anything outbound that can carry a file, like ssh, rexec, http, smtp, etc. Come to think of it, just lock it out.

Me to! But, I am the IT guy! waahahahahahaha!

<grin> There are times it's good to be the Eeevil Overlord. </grin> Of course, I'm not...... but I've also got a tame SSH server on the outside world (it'll run on any port I designate.) I've even been known to run a browser with a tunneled X display back to my desk, purely as a demonstration, of course.

Two things
Hard IP address and or mac of your workstation
Access to the nanny box to enter hard ip or mac into it's tables of 'permitted'.
