Never show all your cards

Two things
Hard IP address and or mac of your workstation
Access to the nanny box to enter hard ip or mac into it's tables of 'permitted'.
done

That's not gonna work. Nanny box isn't even here. All we got here is switches and a T1 box. Servers are elsewhere. Nanny box is probably in DC.

Yeah. Don't even ask. It's all government executive branch agency low-ball contract crap. I got a Catalyst 3750 sitting in my office and I'm the only one connected to it. Anything I could do with that? Plug my laptop in the console port and take over the government, maybe?

No, you are SOL, they have a tunnel setup between you and them, get a cable modem installed on the side :D OR fire off your wireless card and see who has an open router nearby.

I figured.

Are you telling me that they are actually competent? I find that hard to believe.

That's going to take some thinkin'. Hmm, justification for a cable modem...?

I'm 3.5 miles from a town of 300. Sometimes my cell phone works, but the chances of a router, open or not, are pretty slim.

Ah well. It was a nice dream while it lasted.

<chuckle> I did some work a year ago, in a CBOT building in downtown Chicago. Open wireless network available, *NO* security, and apparently no restrictions.

how about a couple of those old ass modems you set the phone handset into, and a couple tin cans with strings, high tech-low tech :D

No, I'm going with the satelite helmet.

dang, what type of source control do you guys use? i'd have figured that yall would lock the code down and only grant as needed access to it. ...or maybe it's just an uptight company i work for influencing me ;)

Gawd, YES. The details will vary depending on exactly what router you're using. Post up what router you're using.

Disable SSID broadcast.
Enable WPA if possible. WEP can be broken fairly easily.
Set up a MAC filter list.

A low tech addition to the list. Turn it off when you're not using it, preferably without a schedule that can be anticipated.

ok figured out that it had a fire wall that was not enabled, and I turned on the password function that I was told didnt exist by the guys I bought it from. now my only fear is my wife forgetting the password SHE chose

Not really much of an option for a lot of us, my connection gets used heavily. Kind of defeats the purpose for having house wide connections if you gotta go turn something on (and off.)

Step one: fire off network neighborhood or equivilent
Step two: See if that intruder has anything shared
Step three: if yes cd into that directory and delete everything in it.
Step four: turn off all your shared files which you should not be doing anyway.
there are some other things too.

Heh..... if you're *REALLY* feeling mean.......

Load some.... ummm....... legally questionable materials into the intruder's public share, and make a call to John Law: "I just noticed some questionable activity......"

I did, errr know someone who renamed some files that involved some deep throating and inserted them in someones power point presentation, they were 9 states away and never got back into my network so I don't now how it panned out.
