Neutral Safety Switch

I have a 98 xj sport and I know that the neutral safety switch has been out for about a year now. However, as of about a week ago, it will not shift into OD. Will the NSS cause this or do I have other problems? Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

From my readings the NSS controls shift points, reverse lights and the ability to start an XJ. I would try cleaning it or putting one in.
