Negative Ghost Rider

Now that is sweet! Gotta love them WWII aircraft.

When I was in the Navy,I was stationed w/an avaition unit out of NAS Whidbey Is. In 1963 we were sent to the east coast to prep for a MED CRUISE w/USS FORRESTAL.As we would visit each country we would do "air shows" kinda like showtime.
Anyway they start the show with an F4 breakin the sound barrier at @ 50 ft out from the flight deck and @ flight deck level. You have no idea what it looks or sounds like, unless you've been there and not expecting it.That was the day I first ever tasted ADRENILIN.But it was definately amazing, cool, you could actually see the shock waves as the pilot broke the barrier.Just before that though there was a kinda spooky silence.

I was stationed on-board the USS Kitty Hawk and returning from a world cruise we invited all the male family members of the crew on board for a small cruise on the last leg of the trip and of course this included a air show. A F-14 did the exact same thing, breaking the sound barrier at flight deck level not more than 50' off the port side of the deck. When the pilot reached the bow he pulled up and went ballistic and broke the sound barrier again going straight up. To this day it's still one of the most impresive things I've ever witnessed.

The house where I grew up was in the foothills not too far from the Van Nuys airport, where they kept all kinds of interesting vintage aircraft. One sunny weekend day I was in the driveway washing Mom's car when a P 51 Mustang appreared in the sky and started doing low level strafing type runs on our neighborhood! That was the most awesome sound I have ever heard, that V12 Merlin shrieking as he dove down and growling as he climbed back up. To this day it still gives me goose bumps thinking of that sound!
