Need some PC help please

Oh, I've been a keyboard navigating fool the past two days.

I just found something pretty interesting:
Dell has a Dell Support Center program that allows you to view system and event changes. Well, I was reading through the unexpected application errors and looking through the ones where AppleNotifierSync.exe went haywire. It gave the version as 6.0.6002.18005.*

When I uninstall the touchpad and reboot, the computer automatically detects hardware changes and reinstalls it ... with this driver version number. So basically Ralph is right: this computer is a moron.

However, I have manually changed the driver to the correct one numerous times, as well as installed old drivers. These changes show up successfully in device manager. No matter what other driver I install, though, Device Manager always says that the most up to date driver has been installed.

I guess I really, really need to find this driver used by applenotifiersync and delete it.

*Actually, the mouse driver version installed is 6.0.6001.18000. Weird.

Try uninstalling the hardware in device manager. Don't just install the driver over the other one.

PS: Next time don't purchase ijunk :)

I have uninstalled the touchpad numerous times and restarted, allowing the computer to auto-reinstall it. Still no dice. This is so bizarre.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the initial error was not this Code 10. The initial error was Code 22 I believe.

After searching around, the common resolution was to go into the registry and uninstall the upperlimit and lowerlimit values. I only had the lower limit, so I uninstalled it. That's when I got the code 10 error.

Dumb question: is System Restore possibly switched on? I know you mentioned it had no restore points, but this almost sounds like it keeps restoring over your changes.

I just restored the registry to the back up copy I made before I changed it; it's Code 19: Windows cannot start this hardware devie because its configure information (in the registry) is inclomplete or damaged.

The system restore is not on, either.

have you uninstalled, then forced a driver?

don't let windows do it automagicaly, as it's not identifying your device properly.

Choose let me install the driver
then advanced
then have disk
then choose the synaptic drive you download from dell.
then tellwindows it's OK when it freaks out about it not being correct for your hardware.

Yeah, I forced the driver into being installed. It shows up in the Device Manager as well as in the registry.

In addition, there are 4 other entries for HID compliant mice. I think it's for the wireless mice.

At this point, I have restored to registry to what it was before I deleted the 'UpperFilters' value and am still getting the Code 19 error. I will try deleting the 'UpperFilters' value and force the computer to reinstall the driver then reboot.

At this point, I have no idea what to do except a fresh install of Vista. Do the Vista CD's have a 'repair' function that will leave my files intact?

So I edited the registry and have the correct driver installed. Still no dice. The wireless mouse still doesn't work either. Still getting the Code 10: This device cannot start.

So, at this point, I don't know what action to take. Should I plug in the Shuffle and delete it from the registry while it shows up in Device Manager?

I think you've beat your head against that wall long enough. Backup your files and repair the install by using the upgrade feature on the OS DVD. You will have to run it from Windows and the DVD will have to be the same version of Vista that is currently on your machine. In other words if you've installed any service packs since you got the machine you will have to uninstall them first. Before you do anything, BACK UP YOUR DATA!! Don't forget email address books and email, your IE favorites or Firefox bookmarks and your Desktop folder. The upgrade procedure shouldn't make any changes to your files, but be prepared for the worst. It happens.

Yeah, I agree. I tried all sorts of things, including deleting all the Apple programs and even Google Desktop.

So I'll find the DVD, uninstall all the service packs and back up the data. I'm just freaking baffled about what happened. Grrr.

I just hate it when something that should be simple to fix doesn't easily get fixed.

or doesn't install correctly or as easily as described in the user's manual or work as advertised or, ... or, ... or. As far as not being simple to fix, Ghost is my friend. So is DeepFreeze.
