windows Vista
Dell Inspiron 1720

-Touchpad worked 2 days ago.
-Bought iShuffle and received an annoying error from applesyncnotifier.
-Uninstalled MobileMe (fixed the error)
-Touchpad stopped working when first received the iShuffle error.
-Mouse will not move or click.
-Wireless USB mouse doesn't work either.

-Uninstalled/reinstalled driver
-Deleted touchpad from system using Device Manager; rebooted and system auto-reinstalled touchpad; still no worky
-Device manager shows "This device cannot start (Code 10)"
-Booted up PC into diagnostic mode and the mouse works there
-When using wireless USB mouse, it shows up in Device manager with no issues
-If a window comes up with a button underneath the arrow (it's in the center of the screen) it will highlight that button like it should.
-I set the mouse settings to show the arrow when CTRL is pressed; it works normally

Did I miss something? I think it's freaking bizarre that the touchpad doesnt work and neither does the USB mouse, but the arrow will highlight a button.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bummer. It sounds like a driver conflict between your mouse driver and the iShuffle. There are a couple of ways to remove drivers from Vista, but they are a pain. Google "how to remove drivers in Vista" and use whichever method looks easiest for you. You want to remove the iShuffle driver. For some reason your PC thinks the iShuffle driver is your touchpad driver. You got the synch error because iTunes was trying to synch with your touchpad instead of the iShuffle. I love Apple products. Damn computer nazis. Have fun.

Hmm, interesting. I'll give that a shot and hopefully it works. Does this also explain why the wireless USB mouse also doesn't work?

Also, I've already reloaded the correct driver for the touchpad and it shows up under the driver details in device manager. If it was pointing to the wrong driver, wouldn't it show up under here?

Dumb question: when you plugged in the iShuffle, did you also reorganise any other USB devices that were plugged into the PC?

Windows has been a touchy little s*** about USB device order since Windows 95B came out, and IIRC that was the first version of Windows with USB support. Usually it detects and reorders stuff automatically, but getting it wrong is also par for the course.

If you did move things around, plug them back in on their original positions and see what happens. If not, disregard :)

X2 on that comment. My ipod nano only works on one out of 4 usb ports on my laptop. No idea why.

Depending on the internals of your USB bus, that particular port may be the only one that can sufficiently power the Nano - and it's possible that if the laptop can't supply power to the device, it can't see it. It's not unknown for that to be an issue.

USB should have kicked RS232's ass to the kerb in so many ways, but it just came up short in so many regards.

Hmm possible, but even if it has a full charge, it doesnt work. If it has full power, then the usb should only be used for data transfer.

Dumb idea: see if this changes with the laptop running on AC power. Dunno if yours does this or not, but my Macbook Pro only fully-powers the USB ports when it's not on battery.

Nothing changed when I plugged it in besides the error message ad computer freezing up. The computer recognizes the shuffle with no problems. Same with a thumb drive. I can take the wireless mouse and plug it into two different computers with no issues.

Also, this was all done on AC power. Laptop plugged into the wall.

Vista ? whats vista, the two people in the company that bought vista laptops were fired, not for that but for other reasons, though the vista one was justification enough for me :D

Well, I'm stumped.

It sounds like the USB drivers and iTunes (which provides the applesyncnotifier component giving an error, IIRC) may be in contention with each other, but why one would cause the other to crap out is a mystery.

You may want to give uninstalling iTunes a shot and see what happens, but I'm honestly not certain that that's going to do much for you. Kinda grasping at straws right now.

run a malwarescan, then clean the registry. anytime a silly issue comes up that should be done to ensure that isnt causing a problem.

i'm calling the touchpad failed, and is causing problems with the mobo. see if you can disable the touchpad in bios and try using a usb mouse.

look for a function keystroke/button/special area of the touchpad that disables it.

I was working on a friends HP he other day, I double tapped a certain area and the touchpad turned itself off. She or I had no idea it would do that, had to google the manual to find out. I don't know that it would disable a USB mouse, but might be worth a look.

The fact that everything works in safe mode tells me you have a driver problem. If you can't manually find and remove the drivers from the driver store, you might try an OS repair. Do you have your OS installation disk?

Actually... Depending on the hardware in use, it may. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to internally tie things like touchpads to the USB bus - so if the touchpad has the magic disable function, disabling it may turn off the USB bus that it's attached to, not just the touchpad itself. And if the mouse hangs off of the same now-disabled USB bus as the touchpad, it's gone too.

Wow, thanks for the responses, I'll give 'em all a shot.

The touchpad doesn't work in safe mode, but it does work in the diagnostic mode when booted up. I'll uninstall everything apple and see if that clears anything up. I'll also google the manual and see if I can find something about turning the touchpad on/off.

I figured if I turned the touchpad off, the wireless mouse would still work. Also, if the touchpad is turned off, will the mouse pointer still work, e.g. will it still highlight a button or something if the pointer is over one?

It should. You can also use the keyboard to navigate the dialogs - 'tab' moves forward between buttons / fields (shift-tab to go backwards), 'enter' selects (radio buttons and checkboxes use 'space' for this), and 'escape' backs out.
