Need input

Just wanting some input to a CEL code to make sure that I'm heading in the right direction. After buying my '98 XJ 4.0L AW4 I started to have a typical NSS issue, no start in Park, shift to Neutral and it starts. Only happens once in a great while. The Heep has been sitting for about a month and I asked the wife to take it when she went to the store the other day, just to get it running and get everything lubed up. She calls me up and tells me the CEL came on, I asked her if it was running fine or was there any problems that she noticed? She said it was running fine. I took it to Advance Auto today and had them pull the code(s) and they came up with P0700 (Trans Control System Malfunction) and P0705 (Trans Range Sensor). So like a good Noob I hit the search function and came up with several others that have had these same codes and the recommended repair was to clean or replace the NSS. Next time I get the chance I'll clean it. What none of the other threads mentioned was how the repair turned out, the threads ended with "I'll give that a try" or something similar, and what else would cause these codes? What if cleaning the NSS does not fix it? where do I go from there?:dunno:

Whats your thoughts?

Thanks Frank, is this the only thing that would cause those 2 codes to pop? From my search it seems that way, I'm just use to seeing a laundry list of things to check. This seems to easy to be true, I don't have that kind of luck.:laugh3: Now all I have to do is wait for a warm day (that I'm off, and the wife doesn't have any plans for me) and dig a path through my garage to my Tool Chest.

3 or 4 of the transmission's electrical circuits go through the NSS. Bad contacts inside the NSS's moving parts keep the circuits from working properly.

Cleaning the NSS generally takes care of most of it's issues.

There's a handfull of threads here that detail the NSS cleaning/maintenance procedure or you can find it on www.go.jeep-xj.info

Thanks Troy, thats pretty much what I've found out during my search. I did print a couple of detailed write ups that I came across, so I think I'm covered there. Thanks again.

i gotta question... my xj is doin the same thing where exactly is the NSS?

Edit: never mind just found it on go jeep

If you want the NSS to just fall off go to Troy's house and ask him to help. Then when he tells you it will take all day and he never can get them off. That does the trick and it will pop right off.

Or you could simply not fix the numerous oil leaks on your high-mileage beater so that things stay well lubricated - and things just fall off........ :D

Those aren't oil leak they are lube ports. I know you are just jealous that your rig didn't come with that option.
