Need help NOW!!! can't get AW4 tranny pan out!!

How do I get the stupid pan off? I detached my dipstick filler tube, and it doesn't seem like any amount of wiggling, pulling, prying etc... is gettin the pan clear! What's the trick?

when I pulled mine off for new filter and oil change it came down rough due to all the silicone. I used a rubber mallet and hit softley on the sides and pryed down with a good pry bar. it took about 10 min to break free and get it clear. hope it helps

Mine was a pain too. I had to pull, yell, and then it finally came free....but it wasn't easy.

I use a flexible pully knife to score the silicone around the edges of the pan (that I can reach - you can't get to the rearward edge very well, but it will break loose once you get everything else free...) and then use a stiff putty knife to break it loose.

A pry bar or a screwdriver is a 'weapon of last resort' here - if you have to use something serious, the first thing to do is clean the mating surfaces of the pan and case. The second thing to do is inspect them thoroughly. You've got a chance of buggering up the mating surface for the pan rail (it's cast aluminum) and bending the pan edge proper - which will then want straightening.

I don't use any sort of silicone when I put it all back together - and you'll find torque specs for the pan screws on my site in the "Tech" section. If I don't have your year up yet, it's because I don't have an FSM for it yet - but stuff like that is consistent through the years, so pick the closest year you can find.

Make sure all the bolts are out, run your fingers around the bolt holes to make sure you didn't miss one by the crossmember or something. Mine almost fell out, it had the original style gasket. Also, when you unbolt the filter, prepare for quite a bit more fluid. Usually though when a cover is hard to come off I find that I missed one of the bazillion bolts holding it on.

I guess I need to be more specific- I got the pan loose, unbolted and pulled away from the tranny, I just cant get the pan out from under the stupid jeep! It hits the exhaust on the front, and the crossmember on the back. I need to remove it completely to scrape the old gasket off.

Then either unbolt the flange on the forward end of the catalytic converter (the nuts should be 3/8"-16 - get brass if you can, and a new gasket there,) or hold the transfer case up with a floor jack and drop the crossmember.

Getting either one out of the way should help. I have usually been able to drop the pan with a bit of finagling - worst case, I have to unbolt the exhaust joint.
