Does anyone here have a heat temp gun? i want to check the temp on my xj since it reads somewhere around 220 at idle, 215 when driving. The fan never comes on, the relay is new and the fan works with direct power. I did replace both coolant sensors and the oil pressure today because i switched the dummy light instrument panel to a gauge type. If someone on here has one i would really appreciate it if i could borrow it for a sec to check my temp. thanks

Forgot to mention, the rad, thermostat, cap and hoses are new. no leaks Burped the system pretty good too. The jeep ran fine when i had the dummy light instrument panel and the light never came on.

You could put the fan on a switch, I know a few people that have it that way. When We crawl, They turn them on. Most of the XJ's I have worked on run on the hot side. I have a three core, flokool WP and run water wetter. It runs at about 200-210.

the stock fan won't kick on until it starts to pass 220. it's normal for it to run a little warmer sitting still and idling, but it shouldn't be over 210 while you're moving. check your fan clutch, replace the thermostat, and try doing a cooling system flush.

and simply "spinning" the clutch is not good enough, when I checked mine it felt firm, but was out of oil, and when I bought the new one it was actually firmer then the new one, but wasn't spinning, the new one sounds like a freaking monster.

Thanks for the advice guys. So today i replaced the water pump because other than the fan clutch, evrything on the cooling system has been changed. So burp the system and when i leave it idling, the needle starts to spike. So i keep trying to burp the system and no dice. All this time the electric fan would not kick on at all. The ac pump was removed because it seized up on the p/o so it has that bypass pulley on it. Well when the truck was on with the electric fan direct, the temp still started rising so i told my friend to fiddle with the gauge temp sensor socket and as soon as he did that the temp came down. Now at idle with the electric fan on, it still reads 215-220. I'm going to pick up the 98 zj fan clutch and see what happens because i think my fan isnt working properly either.

did you buy a replacement fan clutch? or did you upgrade to the zj one?

So today as soon as i got out of work i got to replacing the clutch fan with the 272310 unit. You could definitely hear the fan now lol.. But anyways, i got that installed and when it was cold enough i put the jeep on ramps and fired it up. I poured some fluid and noticed some bubbling so i added till it didn't want anyomore. threw on the cap and took it for a test drive. I noticed that the temp was about the same as before so i ran it with the heat on full blast. At first, the temp went down to the desired temp but before getting to the house it went up slightly but not like before. I hope that by tomorow the temp fixes itself because im running out of options :( did i mention im trying to get it running right so i can go to the baja 500? :/

Finally got it fixed! changed the t stat because my suspicion of a patially stuck t stat was right. Got a 180* Stanton tstat and that was the ticket. Drove it till it warmed up and the needle is now just a hair over 210 at idle and around 200 running around in the city. The real test will be tommorow after work because thats when i get caught up in the 91 traffic but for now This is a vast improvement! Thanks to all who chimed in especially yota wrench. I'm glad that there are still people out there like you guys.

your gas mileage is going to suffer with a 180° stat in there, and it's just a band aid on the problem.

Agreed.

Cherokees run best at 195 or so. Both of mine run cool and because of that get poor fuel economy and contribute to higher emissions. My problem though is an over zealous radiator, I need to get a restrictor plate made.
