Need computer help - no sound at all

Like the title says, I have no sound at all. I've tried everything I know to do and nothing thus far has worked.

Here's some details:

Mobo
- Processory is: Athlon 64 3400+
- Board is: MSI K8T Neo-FSR (MS-6702)
- Chipset is: VIA VT8383 Apollo K8T800, AMD Hammer

Multimedia
- Audio adapter is: VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller

As far as I know all the drivers are up to date using Live Monitor and just by manually checking everything. I have run the Windows troubleshooter and nothing has worked thus far. I talked to a friend who built my previous setup and he thinks that it may be a BIOS problem.

So, anyone have any idea?

Check the property settings on the sound application setup and make sure it's set to your speaker type, IE Analog or digial speakers... I've seen them change for no reason on a few occassions..

Been a while since I dealt with AMD stuff. From memory, I had sound related issues as well. Usually involved removing and re-installing fresh VIA drivers. Do they still use the 4-in-1 stuff?

Thanks, I'll try that.

Yes they do. That's one of the things I haven't uninstalled/reinstalled, so I'll try that, too.

M'kay. None of those worked, but I did get a nice new nifty audio controller with them. When my sound starts working I will really like it. Ack.

haha yeahh I really like that audio controller. Sorry none of those worked for ya, I've built quite a few computers for friends, most of them amd's, and this has never happened.

Do you have a backup hard drive? If you do, save all your important files and pictures and reformat your computer.

I hate to ask, but did you check that your speakers are plugged in or in the correct port? If your PC is under your desk it's possible to accidently kick out the plug. It sounds silly, but I see it happen all the time.

Is the problem with your speakers? Have you tried your speakers on another PC or tried a known good set of speakers on your PC?

If you think it's a BIOs problem, disable the on-board audio, reboot and then re-enable it.

Ya, I checked everything. I'm not sure what is up, but I've just reformated and it has started crashing again. I now know 99% that it's a hardware problem. I may end up just getting my money back for the board. This is getting ridiculous. My 1.12Gig AMD never gave me any problems... ever. I only upgraded because this was a great price, but now I just want the money back so I can get a new case, power supply and some more RAM.

Thanks for trying to help everyone.

What OS, integrated or card? Manufacturer of card? Legacy?

Go start -> right click on "My Computer" and go to "Management". OR if that isn't available to you right click on the "My Computer" icon on you're desktop and go to "Management". Once in go to "Device Manager". Once inside tell me if you see anything that looks like a yellow "!" or "?".

If this is a card you installed you'rself and you're motherboard also has integrated sound, remove you're card and attempt to use the onboard motherboard audio. This will help us know if it's an issue with the hardware of the card, or an OS/Software issue (Which is probobly is).

No way it's you're CPU. Try what I said and we will get to the bottom of this. NO reformating you're computer. It probobly won't do a dang thing.

Try kicking it, it made my monitor work and my speakers work when they were on the fritz. Now i've got a nice new 19" flat panel so no more kicking required.

I came across an interesting system board from asus last month, AMD processor and new MB, what made it interesting was the MB would not recognize the processor as what it was but as a much slower model. Downloaded a bios update and applied it then once it rebooted a whole bunch of other stuff that did not work before started working. This was a set that the customer purchased from newegg w/mb,cpu,memory.
If you have a bunch of stuff that is not working correctly you might want to see if there are any bios fixes on the msi site. The bios on your board is up to V2.2 from 3/4/2005.

mdl - I've already checked all of those, and nothing worked. I have already reformatted. It's no big deal. Now at least I know it's not software related.

Ramsey - No kicking, but thanks. :D

RichP - That is weird. I'll make sure to update them once I get everything worked out.

JeepFreak - Tried it all. Thanks for trying to help.

I'm telling you it works, its just like a Jeep. If something is wrong all it takes is some gentle massaging with a BFH.

myself i dont buy MSI , your better off buying Gigabyte or Asus.

Would you like more salt rubbed in that wound sir ? Personally I would not touch gigabyte, I only use Intel and Asus and for commercial builds pretty much stick to Intel.

Have you ever run all 3 of those? MSI is good stuff, so is Asus, but I've only heard not-so-great things about Gigabyte. If I had wanted to spend over $600 for the SLI setup, I would've definitely gone Asus, but this was $150 MSI board, AMD CPU and PNY GPU. The GPU by itself new (a few months ago) was $250.
