The first step is in the antenna, I like fiberglass FireSticks but the Wilson 1000 magnetic mount is an awesome antenna too.
I run mine off a ball mount on the left side of the body. This requires two 1/4" holes and one 1" hole. If you're not 100% committed to a CB just get a mag mount and stick it on center of the roof, they work surprisingly well. If you run with a roof rack expect complications. Roof racks play hell on antennas. You could mount an antenna to the rack if you make sure to ground the rack well, I wouldn't expect perfect performance though.
As far as range if memory serves if you have a properly setup and adjusted antenna (and it's long enough), a CB pushing the FCC maximum 4 watts, your line of sight range is twenty miles.
After you get your stuff installed try to hook up with a local member who has an SWR meter to adjust your antenna. Your CB will thank you.
As for radios both yours and JCDP's are good. I don't really like the one JCDP posted because the mic is uncomfortably large in my hand.
I have one of these and absolutely love it:
