I know this is a XJ fourm, but eveyone has really helped me out with my XJ. Just want to know what you think. Looking at a 1988 Wrangler for the SO. The details 4.0l, 5 speed think it is the peugot, 231 x-fer, 265,000 miles, Factory hard top w/ sun roof, factory hard doors w/ windows that roll all the way down, A/C, PB, PS. Asking price is $3500.00. I know XJ, ZJ fairly well not to much about the SWB. This will be a D.D. maybe small lift 30" to 32" tires. The tranny is really the only thing that worries me. Is it hard to swap a AX-15 in? Is this a fair price?

If it's an 88 it doesn't have a 4.0L unless someone swapped it in. 4.0's start in '91, before that was the carb'ed 4.2L (or a 4 cylinder).

If it's in good shape, that seems like a good price... have you guys looked at prices on wranglers around the NW lately? I can't find one on craigslist under 4000, unless it's a 4 cylinder with no options or it's busted somehow. Running and driving in generally good shape, that's a decent price.

My only question is, why not find an inexpensive XJ for the SO to drive as a DD? It will have more creature comforts, will handle better, and they're a dime-a-dozen, you can find them all over the NW for dirt cheap. http://seattle.craigslist.org. I'll bet you could find a good 87-90 cherokee on there with less miles at a much better price.

BTW, if you do buy that, and the tranny goes out, I'm parting my rig out pretty soon and will have a spare for you for cheap. :)

I all ready have 88 XJ, she has a 96 ZJ but wants a removable top. I thought that it had the same motor as my XJ. I am not going to bother with this one. She will have to wait and save up some money to get a newer one.
Thanks for the replies.

Don't buy an '87-'90 YJ unless you plan on swapping out the 4.2 for something else, or are willing to put a Weber on it and deal with a carburetor. Save up for a '91+ and you'll be much happier.

I have to agree with Avanteone. My friend had nothing but problems with his Peugot and 4.2. The carb was rebuilt a million times and still didn't run right. The only fix was putting in a 5.0 and T19.

Try telling that to my wife when she just HAD to have that 87 POS. :D Brings me along to look at it with her, halfway across the state, and buys it anyway after I say, 'OMG let's just rent a car and drive back!' Hehehehe...last time she bought a 'cute' Jeep. Her WJ is SO much better. :D

I think I recall advising you not to buy that one as well :)
