They can check for salvage titles, which means a vehicle has been totalled and paid off by an insurance company, but the info comes from the DMV records, not insurance records.
While Carfax can give some good info, it is NOT complete. Vehicle auctions will not allow the use of ANY Carfax information to handle arbitration claims. Carfax info can be useful, but remember, they are mostly a marketing company. That Carfax that was just run for you cost the dealership that ran it $12.50.

i was wondering how vwcaferman got that carfax(for what appeared to be free), why couldn't the original guy just run one himself on the net? i know it costs us like twenty or so...what gives? must be nice to have stealership connections....

It does cost you to run one on the internet, but some people have a membership with Carfax that charges a flat rate for unlimited look-ups. I'm not asking people to pay, I just know that some people have these memberships for whatever reason are are kind enough to help others out.
Every once in a while though there is a free Carfax deal that will pop up somewhere, but I couldn't find anything today.

Like I said, the information is useful, but not complete, and doesn't show accidents. However, when a customer asks to get a report we just run it.....and make no representations to what it means.
It's kind of the same thing with Kelly Blue Book (which we use on the west coast). You can get retail book, and an estimated private party value, and an estimated trade in value, for free on the Net. But, the only figure that we use to buy and sell cars with, the wholesale book, you can only get with a paid annual subscription. More marketing......
