So I picked up some 12" 7100 shortbodies (thanks jim). I put em on the xj today with the T&J upper mount and lower mount attatched to the side of the LCA mount and as it sits I have 1" of down travel. I can probably fab up a new lower mount that sits up like 4" higher... or I can find someone who wants to trade me for a 12" standard body or a 14" short body. Im shooting for close to 5" down travel. What do you guys think? I want this thing driveable by Friday so I need to make up my mind sooon. THANKS!!

Guy

I crunched some numbers... a bilstein 14" standard body would give me 8" downtravel and 6" uptravel. 14" shortbody would give me 6" down and 8" up. 12" standard body biulstein would give me 4" down and 8" up...

for some reason the "crunch some numbers" part was funny to me. When somebody crunches numbers I think of Apollo 13 and NASA engineers with slide rulers trying to figure out how to fix a space ship that is on the moon.

I crunched some numbers... a bilstein 14" standard-body would give me 8" down travel and 6" up-travel. 14" short-body would give me 6" down and 8" up. 12" standard body bilstein would give me 4" down and 8" up...
Will the suspension actually move through these numbers, or is that based only on the shock lengths?

Before you trade shocks around, disconnect your current shocks and see if the front axle will actually move through that range.

Just out of curiosity, what is the installed height of your springs, and what front suspension are you running?(stock springs at ride height are about 11.5"-12.5")

I'm still having a hard time seeing how you can pull those travel numbers? Either your lower mount is WAY low, and you're going to stuff your diff into your oil pan at bump, or you have a BUNCH of lift. This is what the shock mounts looked like on the MJ before they came off, and again with RE 5.5 springs.

The coil at ride height is about 18" .... from top shock mount to bottom shock mount at ride height is 27" .... The 12" bilstein short body is 28" extended. The numbers I crunched came from drawing full scale pictures of the suspension and drawing each of the shocks in at ride height, extended, and compressed. On paper it all made sense. I'm asking you guys because I'm no expert and you guys are...

On another note I tried putting the 10" short bodies on the rear. I'm running RE 3.5 in packs and a 1.5 in shackle... same problem. So I put on the 12" short bodies, cycled it and it worked great! I had 7" of down travel and 5 inches of uptravel. So I guess I need to sell the 10's and buy some 14's...

??? ahhh

Yeah... no worries man!!!! not your fault I need to sell these 10's and pick up some 14's and I'll be pulling 12" of travel in the rear withought cutting through the floor and 14" of travel in the front with hydraulic bumps .... I'll take that! I just need to get these 10's sold so I can get some 14's and get em mounted before Saturday so I can drive this thing out to Barstow. Thanks Jim!!! I really appreciate everything!

Now once I get the smokin 4.0 motor put in in the 2 door I need to decide if I wanna switch everything over and just put a little lift on this 4 door 2.5 or start from scratch on the 2 door 4.0 and try to make it better than this one! LOL

hey no worries man! not your fault! If I can sell these 10's and pick up a set of 14's I'll be pulling 12" of travel in the rear without cutting through the floor and 14" of travel up front on air bumps... I'll take that!!! I just need to get this done FAST so I can get all this done to drive it to Barstow on Saturday and test it out and check out the races.

Thanks again for all your help Jim I really appreciate it!

that front end will cycle 14. the lower shock mounts are not too low. the diff doesnt hit the pan at full bump.
the coils are ft 6"

be careful with what shocks you use.. some 12" standards are longer at full compression than the 14" shorts.

the collapsed length is what you need to be worried about.. either way you are goin to have to re mount the bump stop.. your gonna have to make a sleeve out of tube that the same as the bump tube is now to act as a spacer. because your goin to have to lower your bump. All the shocks are looking at puttin on ther right now are too long for the current setup. right now that jeep is set for a 10" foa. thats 18.25 collapsed.
