Granted I run LeBarron hood vents, but that 80s Lebarron style front end wouldn't have fit the production XJ too well.
 
i know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but...........that header panel and grille is aweful! at least they made one good decision before production.
 
I think they made a couple of good decisions. Looks like IFS under that one too.
 
they probably couldn't fit it with the IFS under there and then after they decided to go straight axle, everything was already done for the 2.5 and 2.8 so they just stuck with it.

just a guess.
 
^makes sense, but still pretty gay. heck, at least they went solid axle...
you know, in about '62 or so, some FSJ wagoneers and J-trucks came with ifs. first 4x4 to do it, i believe. jeep also had the world's first full time 4x4 as well. both of those are things i wouldn't want, but it is cool that jeep did it first.
