my xj camping trailer

Freedom of speech is great.
But manners should still prevent non constructive criticisms that are hurtful for no good reason.

Last post from me on this...You missed the point or points actually....It had nothing to do w/ cutting up jeeps (pristine or not)...it was about jeeps that were still exceptional and used like they weren't....nothing was wrong w/ that jeep, just read about it on http://www.xxxpedition.com or Svens comments on Expedition Portal, the only reason it was left behind is because of German standards. He's having a hell of a time building in a new jeep there right now.

I would be just as flabbergasted if someone turned one of the Paris/New York Transcontinental 2009 jeeps into a garbage trailer.... http://www.facebook.com/pages/Paris-New-York-Transcontinental-2009/41595873841

If someone needs to cut up a rust free pristine XJ just to show off, would you please send me the left rear door and rear hatch as mine have severe rock and tree damage.

Many people have continued to comment even after I offered to stop....
Silence does not equate manners. :wave1:

Can we have a mod please come in here and clean up this thread?

6-18 months from now when this gets bumped again it is going to be embarrassing.

We need a "diggin-yourself-a-hole" smily

More like this?

I really like that idea i would love to find another cheap xj and do that.

I'm a good friend of Sven and yes he could of taken it but i did pull it apart and it was in worse condition then it looked it had that many cracks and sections that were meant to be joined together that it would not of lasted to long... and would of needed a new body which is what we did we put all the parts onto a 2000 classic

Not sure if this was actually asked already, there is alot of posts, and alot have nothing to do with the build lol.

The axle used. Why didnt you just toss a d35 under there rather then a trailer axle. I ask because I now has a spare XJ chassis. It would be a big undertaking to make a trailer out of it. But somethig fun and interesting to do.

Would there be an issue with leaving the 35 under there and calling it good?

Im sure to some that might be something similar to asking if I can reuse a head gasket from an old engine because mine is blown... but just roll with it ;)

Leaving a complete axle should be fine. If you removed parts from it may be different.

in Australia it is illegal to use an car axle has to be solid

Yes, check your local laws. IIRC it is illegal here in Ontario as well... but lots of people do it anyway.

chopping an MJ back half is blasphemous unless it's too rusted out to repair.

comanches are rare. now if this argument were over wrecking an MJ to build a trailer, there would be a fundamentally acceptable reason to argue it....there are less than 300,000 MJ's out there (that's if EVERY single one still exists). there are millions of cherokees.

and yes, you're being ignorant over the subject. YOUR opinions are not everyone's bag.

as for a "stretch" MJ, it's been done.

I cut one... I wanted an MJ long bed trailer... I looked for over a year for a clean one that had lived it's life... found one cheap and cut it in half... now I have the start of my trailer... I had the front sold, but it fell through... I THINK I've got another buyer lined up, he wants to truggy it out, cool, with ALOT of work it'll live on in two separate places...
I can understand the concern for cutting a good runner, but once it's lived one life or been wrecked... my feelings are... do with it what you will...
Also there are a lot of MJs in Calif. in the high desert... one boneyard has many in various states... I've got at least 3 in 2 local yards... admittedly runners are going to just get more scarce...

Unfortunately the trailer isn't as far along as I'd like, but I'm a patient man...

no, it's not runners. when I buy a used vehicle, my concerns are NOT engine/drivetrain operations, but shape of the body.

I can replace all of the mechanical parts. it's more expensive to have body work done, and have something painted.

so, a rust and almost dent-free MJ is what I'm looking for. remember, I'm in the salt belt. we just don't have those options here (mostly we have fred flintstone editions)

It's funny cause out here body parts aren't too bad to come by... to rehab. my MJ it would of been 5K to 7K. So it'll live on in a different form...

strange.

I can pull deals all day on NEW OEM parts and build a complete drivetrain/suspension/engine for under 3 grand. the problem is finding the comanche to put them in.

same goes for YJ's, CJ's, and XJ's.

Yep. You can even buy a new frame, tub, whatever for the SWB Jeeps. Not for XJs and MJs though. My suspicion is that being a unibody has a lot to do with it. Not as simple.

If I could buy a new XJ or MJ unibody for say... $2-3k I'd consider it. Nothing beats the fun/joy of building a vehicle up from the chassis when you don't have to worry about rust, previous owner F-ups, etc.

pretty much. I'm lucky....I have two comanches here with little to no rust...one is an 87 from arizona, that came from a friend of mine who owns a local junkyard (he was down there, saw it, and figured he'd bring it back for me....$700 in scrap from old projects and it was mine). the other one is my 86, which sat in a field for 10 years and had very minor rust under only one rear fender flare, and a big dent in the driver's side fender. trans was in the back, and it had a 2.8 liter in it....I gutted, restored, and put a 96 camaro 3.8l v6 in it. that was all dandy til it got hit in the rear end, and now I can't find a decent long box for it.

it's the body parts that really get to me....

I was thinking about building a teardrop camper, then remembered Kyro's XJ Camper and thought that would totally be the way to go. So Kyro, you had the XJ trailer for a while, then sold it. If you were going to build it again, what would you do differently? How's it holding up after all these years?
