How bad is it to drive with a busted speed sensor? My XJ is idling rough and I get a burning smell here and there. Im away from my garage now but I'm working on getting a replacement. Will I do any damage if I continue to drive?

How difficult is it to replace the speed sensor at the transfer case? Do I need to drain the transfer case to do it?

There is no problem driving with a busted speed sensor other than you speedometer and cruise control will not work.
If you are getting a burning smell I would crawl underneath the Jeep and look for an oil leak dripping onto the exhaust system.
When replacing the speed sensor; ensure that you identify the alignment mark position and install the same as you found them. The number and alignment mark signify the speedometer gear tooth range.

that was easy! only took 30 minutes and most of it was spent heating up the heat shrink cause i did it with a bic lighter
