My recent dumb moves

So the belt blew in my 97' on my way to work. I figured I'd have AAA tow me to the closest garage, they would throw a new belt on, and I would be no more then an hour late for work.

Well they didnt have the belt, I had to wait 2 hours for them to get it, and then I got charged $55 for an hours worth of labor when it took them 20 minutes. ($126 bill)

Later that day I realized I should have just had it towed to Napa right up the road. I've done belts before, I had the Haynes manual in the back seat, along with a 126 peice tool set. I could have saved myself $55 and the belt markup. And I bet I could have had it done myself in a quarter of the time.

Second I went to MA from ME yesterday to pick up a new motor for my Nissan. On the way down I could smell coolant and I was running a bit hot. I get to the kids house where the motor was, and I was dripping coolant. The top hose sprung a leak. We loaded the motor in the back of the Jeep, and I proceeded to drive all over Wellsley and Framingham. The first Autozone didnt have the upper hose, and sent me to Framingham. I stoped at a Jeep dealership but the part dept was closed because it was Sunday. I tried to get the guy to sell me a new hose, and just give me one off a Jeep out in the back lot to get me home. He wouldnt do it. I finally got to Framingham an hour later, and got the new hose, got it on, and half way home, I realized the pin hole was so close to the end, I could have cut 2 inches off and just reattached it. (the Jeep did great with the added 700 pounds in the back by the way)

Why do I always think of this stuff when its to late? Thats my rant for today, feel free to flame

I checked for you, an xj belt is around $21 at my towns NAPA and weve got a couple of upper hoses for them.

The lesson of the day is to slow down and think for a bit about the problem before jumping a decision and running with the first idea that comes to you.

I know what you mean zfinger, some days it just dont pay to open the toolbox or even think
.
I spent a couple weeks and almost $300.00 replacing parts and trying to find out why my 91 was "running hot" with NO RESULTS.
Turned out to be the gauge itself. $20 for the gauge, like $12 bucks for brass parts at Lowe's and "WALA"!!! its fixed.
OH WELL .... now i aint gotta worry about a radiator,waterpump,T-stat,2 sensors, ect... ect.... ect..... for a while now. ;)

I've got a spare belt and spare hoses under my back seat.

I'd have a spare XJ under there if it would fit :laugh3:

Its a wonder what preventative maintenance will do for you.

I've got two more to add to my list...

I went to change the TC fluid, and couldnt figure out what to use to get the drain plug out. I layed under the Jeep for about ten minutes before I went inside to think some more. I told my dad and he asked "An allen wrench wont fit?" For some reason I forgot allen wrenches existed, I dont know what I was thinking.

And yesterday I couldnt figure out why my center consol was so hot. I was thinking crazy thoughts, like was it on fire or something. As I'm feeling around going down the road I felt the vents in the back. I didnt know I had rear air!

Every now and then you have to own up to stupid shit like this, figured you guys might get a laugh out of it.

well thanks to your brightness my jeep now has a new belt and two hoses in the back..along with the stuff all ready back there which includes an extra quart of oil, a quart of tranny fluid, one more for the t-case. a fire extinguisher and med kit, and jumper cables, a tow strap and zip ties, bungees and ratchet straps..a roll of duct tape..now i have a milk crate full of crap sliding around in the rear hatch...thanks..

Just think of what you have learned for the next time.

Zactly... Hindsight is always 20/20!! Lessons learned, next time you will be thinking McGyver like and not focused on getting the engine home! :)

Isin't it just a larger (that what you get in a boxed set) socket that fits the transfer case plugs.
Up until '96 or maybe '97 that was the case; I think it's a 1 3/16" that fits the t-case. It's one of the three "Big Sockets" in my toolchest, anyway.

After that, the big-headed bolts in the t-case were replaced by much smaller Allen-headed bolts. The hole size is still the same as far as I know, but they simply changed the design of the plug.
