My "new to me" 99 XJ

Well just picked this up the other day as kind of a high school graduation present for myself. The money I got for graduation paid for half of it. Found it on eBay about 100 miles from my house and went to pick it up. It's a 1999 4.0/AW4/231/D30/C8.25. It also has a 3" Superlift kit with an AAL in the back (that's working on sagging already), Skyjacker steering stabilizer, and extended stock swaybar endlinks. The thing rides friggin awesome compared to my 1990 with the RE Superflex though. I don't know if the arms just aren't pulled out as much or what but it rides like a Caddy compared to my other one. It's a prior salvage unit, has 88,000 miles, runs like a champ and has working A/C, paid 2499.00 for it. I don't figure I got hurt too bad at all. It's nice to have something that's finally not almost as old as I am to drive around. I am keeping my other two Heeps also to my Dad's dismay so I'll try to get some group shots up also. Anyway...to the pics.
Now these are all the ones that were just in the eBay auction, I'm going to try to get more up tomorrow if I have time.

The guy built the bumper himself. He owns a body shop in a small town and has a plasma cutter. He did a great friggin job on the thing, capped off the ends, used really thick steel, added D-Rings, it really looks good I think. I think since this is my DD though I may get one that either wraps around or go back to stock and put this one on the rear of my MJ. I also plan to switch the TJ Canyons and BFG A/Ts off my other XJ to this one since it's just going to look pretty sitting in the driveway for the next month or two anyway. I also have a few questions since I'm new to the 97+ XJ world, mainly just stupid piddly ones.
1. Did I get the last year of the good Dana 30? It's the high pinion in a 1999 right?
2. Had they switched to New Venture from New Process in 1999? I don't know why I care on that, just curious.
3. The majority of the damage happened in the back end of the this thing, and the tailgate was replaced. That isn't where the "JEEP" is supposed to go is it? Didn't most of them have 4.0L over there? Is there supposed to even be "JEEP anywhere on the gate?
Thanks for any answers and let me know what you guys think.

This is the best pic I had offhand. Jeep on the left, 4.0 Litre badge on the right. Your '99 should just have the decal, but in the same spot. If you want to put one on though, I'd spring for the badge. Your Jeep badge looks a little low and to the left a tad, but it's in the general area it's supposed to be in.

Looking at the thing though, if salvage is not a problem for you; I'd say you got a pretty good deal on it......................
Yeah salvage doesn't bother me too much, I seem to have a problem of hanging onto these things waaay too long. The way the salvage was fixed bothers me a little bit because I guess they welded a whole new quarter on in the rear and when the back door is closed you can see a little light through it. I'm just a nitpicker (sp?) like that though. Thanks for responding on the badge too man, I like it better than the decal also.

Yes, it should still also have the HP D30, and it should also have the 0630 Head on the engine. 99 seems to be the last good year for front axles and engine heads.

Nice Jeep! Forrest Green is the best color, IMO. :)

Edit: If you can see light through the back like that, i'd watch it close for a small water leak....ya never know...

Edit Edit: Here are some pics I posted up the other day of mine, so you can see again where the Jeep badge and 4.0L decal go. click this

Let's have a close up of those front D rings...

If you are going to wheel it I wouldn't worry too much about the salvage title. Trail damage will reduce it to something of similar value over the years anyway.
enjoy your new Jeep!

You really have a disease!! Love the green

I'll try to get a close up over the weekend. It got really rainy and crappy here today so I can't really take pictures. The guy who owned it before me was building it to wheel but I'm gonna leave it the way it is and make it my DD. I've got my MJ to wheel, the swampers are friggin loud at highway speed so it needs to be good for something.

I know I've got the HP D30 in my 98, but I'm not sure if I have the 0630 head or not?

What was so great about the D30? Just because its HP? And whats the advantage about the head?

You have the 0630 head. However, if you'd like to verify this, look on the head itself for the casting number. It will be located on the drivers side, about halfway down on the head....right below the valve cover (if you're valve cover gasket has been leaking for a while, you might need to clean the oil gunk off to read the casting number). The advantage is, in 2000, Chrysler put a different head on the 4.0, which has the casting of 0331, and while still just as strong in some cases, is a lot more prone to cracking, generally speaking (meaning, you see a LOT more people having cracked heads on 2000+ XJ's with only 60, 70, 80K on them, than you do on any other year). Do a search on here for "0331 head" and you'll get all the info you could ever want on it.

And the HP D30 is a stronger variation of the D30....which is important to you if you plan a moderate sized lift on your XJ.

My 99 was built 5-99 and I have the 0630 head so look on your drivers door for the build date if its before 5-99 (great chance it was) you've got the same head as me.

You have the last year with a distributor too! My 00 has coil packs:thumbdn:

That was HUGE for me getting a 1999, for some reason I just don't like coil packs. Anyway, I finally got some more shots of it since the weather dried off a little.

D-Rings are beefy!

Factory CD player that the guy got from a junkyard and installed and fog light switch that isn't hooked up to anything...

Homemade trailer hitch with PO's initials burnt into it and a D-Ring bolted on...

Oh yeah the "Roll me over" sticker...free, gotta love it.

Hey 91 are those the Farmboy tail lights that they don't make anymore, or are they something different?

Whats the little orange button infront of the tcase handle do? Some kinda emergency eject thing where when you push it, you and the seat go flying out of the roof of the jeep? :D

Yeah...that's why I haven't pushed it yet. I don't actually know, he mentioned that he intended to hook up two sets of lights, and apparently that fog light switch wasn't there from the factory. I guess the orange one must've been for the 2nd set.

Nice rig, love the bumper. My 99 sport (build date 3-99) has the NP 231 as far as when the change was made (NPG to NVG) I dont know, but it was a change in name only. Its still the the same company located in Syracuse, NY.

Yeah I crawled under mine today and all it says is "231 J" so I don't know if mine was the changeover year or what but who cares I guess.

Oh hell yeah...the Canyons made it look even better.
