My new project

For those of you who don't make it over to PNWJeep.com.... here's a pic of my newest project:

When all is said and done.... tube fenders, crusher corners, etc... and after a test run or two, it will get painted Sublime Green.

Build plans (so far) include:

Retain stock 4.0 HO motor, /w some normal bolt-on goodies
Swap XJ AW4 overdrive auto trans.
Atlas 2 speed Transfer case.
Link the front end /w coil overs, 2-3" stretch
Spring over the rear, leaf swap, 5-6" stretch (100-102" wheelbase)
Retain my current axles (HPD44, 8.8, 5.13's, DETROITS), wheels, tires, etc....although it MAY end up /w 37's on it.

Full cage, Tube Fenders, rockers, comp. cut 1/4's, etc, etc, etc.

I've been looking to do it for a while... been talking about it for a year at least.... kinda just been waiting on the right deal to come along. I wanted '91+ to get the H.O. 4.0, I wanted auto, and I wanted cheap. I found this one /w a bad transmission for $1500 and only 98k miles.

Great base for a project, John. I sure do enjoy having a thrashin' in the woods wheeler in the CJ to alternate with the snow run/family friendly/creature comfort wheeling in the XJ. Are there additional plans to build up a mild XJ to keep the family in comfort, or will this rig cover all the bases?

Plans have changed, stay tuned for details.... but it will now be linked front and rear /w F-O-A 2.5" coilovers, 37" Krawlers, TrailReady beadlocks, etc.

Good call on the linked F/R. I was going to say for your shop, you should really step up on some crazy fab work and avoid some of the easy over the counter every-barbie-rig-in-the-western-hemisphere-has-one bolt ons. Just my .02

Didn't you buy a white MJ a while back for a shop rig or something along those lines?

The MJ was like 2+ years ago...sold already but I know the guy who has it.

Yes, it will be Sublime Green. NO V8 for me... at least for now. Maybe an avenger supercharger though

X2. A lot of cool ideas, and it will be a very cool rig based on the parts and ideas you have listed for it. But it's hardly "budget". I do like the way you have all of the components planned out and listed, which ties in well with the concept that it's a rig someone without a lot of fab skills could copy. Providing the lack of fab skills coincides with deep pockets.

Compared to other rigs that are normally featured in that rag, it will be.

It's on a budget, just not a $3 or $5K budget Realistically the entire rig could be built for around $20K from scratch.... which isn't bad considering the amount of money we rack up in our rigs. I've added up what I'm in MY rig in parts before and I was @ $15K real quick.

Curious question John...

With a new rig all built like that, are you worried about getting bored?

I've known a few people that have had very built vehicles like that and ended up saying they had more fun in their more moderately built vehicles. The complaint was that every trail they ran was suddenly too easy, and it was hard to find trails that could actually present them a challenge. They could of course still find challenges by travelling to Moab and such, but got to do that like once a year.

Any worries there?
