Was a good run. Cold as hell but was a whole lot of fun. We had all we needed in one day.

We had...

1 stuck sammie that neeeded to take a strap up an icey hill.
1 brand new wheeler.
2 broken windows and other minor body damage.

all in all a healthy weekend run.

Why we need to pay attention to sidehills when you are on icey moutains with 2 ft of powder with lockers.

we were attempting to take Holcomb creek from east to west. When we go to the point where 2n08 (i think) connects to 3n16 we found that no one had gone up this trail since it had last snowed, so we just cruised along making the trail. Then we got to the first uphill. Tim did the best he could at getting the trail cut, but there was just too much snow and too much ice under that snow. So I was going to give it a shot to see if i could go any better of a job. I was able to make it further but it was a slow process and it was close to 3pm already and I knew that we were not even ON holcomb yet. So I was going to back down and underestimated how steep the side hill was when i was backing down.

Needless to say the road was not as flat where I was at and ended up slipping down the sidehill. We played around with the hi-lift for about an hour trying to winch it but did not make any real progress so I had Tim strap me up again and give a good tug while i used the tree as a pivot point and spun around it, and he was able to pull me back onto the trail. Then we went home cold and wet.

It was a very slow ride home mind you. It took us 2-2.5 hrs to get down the 330 from big bear. And then 10 and 215 was stop and go until it passed the 60. So All in all it took me 4.5 hrs to get home that night. It was a LONG day.

OK, can you elaborate what happened there?
Well, it kinda went like this. I was leading the three of us over to Holcombe Creek. We were on 2n08 heading East from 2n16. At the long hill heading up from the strip mine, I had made several attemps at the hill with my D30 snow plow and could not break over the top. Well it seemed like a good idea to have Scott pack the snow since he was running taller tires. All was going well, except he tried to claw his way over rather than making multiple attemps. That's when he started to slide side hill. I plowed my way to a position ahead of him to try and strap him out foward. I couldn't get enough bite and was sliding off to the side too. At that point we decided to get out the Highlift and "winch" up and back. After 4 or 5 "Bites" with the jack, I traded locations with Scott and I got in his rig. Well thats when the branches won out over the glass. Later it was decided that after chopping the offending branches out of the jeep, Scott would be able to pivot off the tree with me strapping him down and towards the trail. That did the trick. By this time the storm was rolling in pretty quick and it was getting dark. We ALL did a U turn and headed out.
I did confirm two things though. 1. I'm going with selectable lockers F & R. 2. A Farm boy rack would have saved the window and sheet metal, mine will be back from the powdercoater Monday, woohoo.

You missed a good run, an even better adventure. It is so tempting to head back up the hill today. lol.

Scott, Steven, I had a great time. Thanks for the invite.

Tim

Glad to hear that you finally cut your teeth, so to speak.

We had some people go up to Big Bear on Sunday. We also found Holcomb to be impassable. But plenty of fun nonetheless.

What a difference a day makes. The drive home was clear sailing all the way...1.5 hours to OC.
