I have the stock overhead console with the MPG display and it is fairly accurate within .2-.3 compared to my math when I divide the fuel filled from empty to full by the miles traveled. I corrected my speedo and verified it's accuracy via GPS speedometer app on my iPhone.
To the OP are you looking at Avg MPG or Instant MPG on the display? The instant is always changing and will drop real low when really putting your foot into it going up hills so for it to say 6 going uphill sounds right and 18 cruising flat sounds right as well if you are re-geared. If your Avg MPG display is saying 6 then you may want to check it out and have the speedo verified and fixed if it is off.
