More lift really worth it!?

I've said it before, so here it is again.

I'd rather wheel the same XJ with 31s and F/R lockers and skids than with a giant lift, 35s, and open/open.

You're gaining what, like 2" of clearance at the diff with 35s instead of 31s?

31s or 32s, bumpstopped right, lockers, skids, and you'll be right there with everyone else, but still able to drive it work.

I drive to work on 35's with 6.5" lift. I do it at 75 mph with no vibes and tight steering, and get 19 mpg doing it.

But, I dont get high centered or stuck on the trail like I did with 4.5" and 31's.

Set your shit up right, and it doesnt matter how tall you are or how big your wheels are (within reason).

I'm at 5" with 33s so I'm a hypocrite anyway :D DD it as well.

My point was the lockers and armor though. I know it wasn't exactly his question, but it may help him make his decision.

It doesnt address the question at all, though - although neither did my response.

If you find yourself hitting your rockers a lot or getting high centered, yes, more lift really is worth it. If your not constantly taking a strap, stick to where you are.

I know :D

But it sort of does because he's asking if bigger lift is worth it, bigger lift generally means for bigger tires... I'm reaching I know :looney:

Dangit, my decision has become further clouded...Im 1 billion percent sure, being younger and never satisfied, that i will be wanting more lift and bigger tires as soon as i start with 31's. IMO cherokees feel top heavy and unstable (save the flaming) above 6'' of lift on the road and in off camber situations. Ive ridden in a handful of 6'' plus xj's and FTMP this is the feeling i get. So by going with such a well acclaimed lift as the RE 4.5, i feel it would be a good platform to build. Later i can get the LA's, axles, gears, and 33's. I like Ray's response about the available wheeling places. Unfortunately i live in NC, 1 hr away from Uwharrie, and fairly close to Tenn. and VA, so theres lots of tougher trail options, and i cant stand havin a jeep and not being able to ride the tougher trails. Hell, i should just buy a Rhino.

you can get rustys 6.5 long arm for 1600

The big goal with an XJ is to get some clearance under your diffs. With the uni-body, we already have decent center clearance. The problem is that we need a lot of lift (or trimming/bump stopping) to fit bigger tires. I have a 3" lift with 32's, and had to cut my front fenders. I still have stock gears and open diffs, but that will change when I can afford to regear and lock. I have been able to go more places since upgrading from 31 AT's to 32 TSL's, and it has a lot to do with the added traction.

My XJ is a daily driver, and I like it at the height it is at. However, my sliders have been used a lot because of the height, but that is why I bought them. Biggest thing to decide is what you want out of your Jeep, and then build it accordingly.

Yeah like i said its a DD first, trail rig second. Since id most likely not go any higher than 33's (hopefully...haha) i figure the 4.5 kit would be nice. Then when i go all out with LA's, gears, lockers, and axles, i can trim some to fit the 33's. Dang i hate how u origionally look at the BB, then the 3.5 sounds affordable, then u make your way almost unwillingly to the 4.5 kit. Argh!
