MJ tow rating

Saw it this morning, throught the Comanche Club thread.

I still have to say 'damnit, why are all the cool things so far away' I'd love to get it just to play with it.

My wife tells me I am one less Jeep Away(I only own 2) from getting put out with the dogs, it's not that far for me but with my wife's tolerance it may as well be on the moon.

You're still comparing apples to oranges. Regardless of the #'s you cannot really compare the MJ to a 3/4 ton truck. I've had both and as I said I tow for income...not an expert by any means BUT you try and get the MJ to do anything a 3/4 ton truck is rated to do and you are braver than I am. Payload 'rating' be dammed. You put 1500 (or 2000) lbs into an MJ and the same in a 3/4 ton...then drive them both. I bet after that you won't think the MJ is '3/4' ton comparable.

Eagle I know you probably know this already...but it may not be the best idea to tell some of these folks (who don't know) that the MJ is 3/4 ton capable...it is not.
Sorry, but I disagree. The standard load rating is 1475 pounds -- that's 3/4 of a ton. The metric tonne rating is 2,200 pounds -- that's more than a 1-ton rating. You may not think it's 3/4 ton rated, but the manufacturer and the government think it is. I have carried over a ton in mine with no real problems other than the brakes not being as strong as I would have preferred. But I later discovered that I had NO rear brakes, so it wasn't a fair test.

My first MJ was an '86 Metric Tonne 2wd model. 4 cyl (with TBI), 5 speed with a D35 rear axle (it may have had a D44 originally) With 4.10 gears and 235/75/15 tires, I drove from Seattle, WA to Ouray, CO (by way of Moab) and back in '02. On the way there, I decided to check what my GVW was. 6,000 lbs according to gov't certified road scale!
This was with 3 adults, a canopy, 2 spare tires (was I glad to have those! We were hit by a CSK delivery truck in CO, which misaligned the front and cost me all 4 of my tires, due to being rotated to the left front every couple hours on the way back) and a pile of spare parts and tools. We made the trip there and back and only offloaded a few bits and pieces along the way and ended up bring more parts back with us. Aside from death wobble (first started in Idaho) and the slave cyl for the clutch going out (kept filling it whenever I had to stop. 10 pushes later it would be empty again so I did a LOT of synchro shifting!) We averaged 70-80 mph across the desert and dropped to 45 in the mountains.
Putting a 5th wheel in the box would increase the load capacity if you did a little extra frame beefing up while you were at it. (and a heavier axle of course) There was one hauling a 50,000 lb 5th wheel semi trailer posted on the MJ list a year or so ago.

We currently own 4. If I buy the wifey a SWB, I'm probably good for at least 2 or 3 more. But finding places to keep them is getting hard.
