Minimum requirements for Dishpan Springs/Holcomb Creek?

What are the minimum requirements for these trails running west to east? I remember doing them along with John Bull in a YJ with 33" tires and open diffs, but that was six years ago.

Ran Holcomb Creek about 8 years ago open/open with 31's and no armor in light snow. But that's been a long time ago

As of a few years ago, the only trouble *at all* on Dishpan was indeed the waterfall. Holcomb, I’d still want at least 33s but I have run it on street 30s inflated all the way on a 4.5” lift and stock everywhere else. It wasn’t fun, or easy, but I ran it like that. :D

did dishpan last summer. the waterfall section i would call very difficult. i would say 33s a locker and good strap points or a winch. i heard that there is a bypass but i havent personally seen it. a lot of rollovers on that section.

For Dishpan I would recommend 33's and a locker probably the same for Holcomb. They could probably be done with open diffs but it would be a struggle.

Rocker protection is a must. The large boulders on both trails will tear 'em up.

I think everything in Big Bear can be done on 33s.

Those trails have changed a lot in the past 10 years. I remember running Holcomb in a 100% stock YJ, but that was 12 years ago! About 4 years ago I ran John Bull in my JK unlimited. Locked in the rear 35" MT/R's and I had to winch twice. Once was because I didn't have sliders and was trying to avoid body damage on a brand new rig. With 33's and an other rig tagging along, I would feel confident.

A Suzuki sidekick on 31's with one locker, IFS front can do and has done Holcomb/ Johnbull East to west.

Ask me how I know ;)

I ran Dishpan a few months ago and I've run Holcomb three times in the last year (both ways). Dishpan has a few elements that are fun but nothing major other than the waterfall. Yes there is a "bypass" so you don't have to climb the face and deal with the huge crack at the top. Howeve the bypass can be tricky as hell depending on ground clearance and wheel base. We ran it with a few built rigs on 35's locked F/R and they had no issues at all. There is even a second fun line around a huge rock on the bypass that some of us took. We also had an open/open jeep on 32's make it, but it took some jacks, some tire spinning and a lot of tries.

Holcomb run west to east has the first rock garden that changes all the time. Last time I was there some group had winched some gate keeper rocks almost blocking stockish jeeps from starting but a few stacked rocks and we were in. After that first section there are 4 or 5 more rock area's that can be run on 33's if you pick the righ lines. With lockers and 35's you can pick much more fun lines! We took an FJ on 33's with the factory locker and it was lots of fun. Had to pick some good lines and stack a rock or two, but very do-able.

So the quesiton, how hard do you want to work and how much do you want to test your protection? I'd say minium build would be sliders, a health skid plate and 33's if you are open open. 33's with a nice lift would help. Lockers always help and honestly I don't think I'd do it with a rear Dana 35 open...to much stress, but I'm a wuss.

Yeah we were the group with the FJ stuck on a rock at the right turn. You all passed us and eventually we caught up at the gnarly climb near the top. I saw your NAXJA sticker and said hi. My wife was driving my red Jeep most of the time. We also had a 4 runner and a green TJ

That's right. I remember now.

I head over your hood every now and then as my kid still has friends and or we usually go ride bike outs there. Maybe i'll see you around.

Always wanted to live over there.
