Mostly a custom restore. I know the owner and I can tell ya, she's not a mega $$$$ bike. Altho the bars and controls ran a pretty penny. Exile builds some sweet stuff but they can be pricey. Bike is most likely worth more than he put into it. He's kinda of a swap meet monster and picks up shit everywhere. We've traded parts back and forth and he's got a garage full of stuff.

Cool stuff. Thanks for the info.

Are those old panheads reliable enough to go into DD service? Just curious... I've been toying with importing a Chiang Jiang CJ750 from China for summer DD work... But a HD might be a wiser choice?

Depends. A panhead that has been gone thru and updated where possible could be a very dependable bike...depending on your riding style. Not overly gentle but not super speed racer. Not a high speed long distance hauler. I've got a bud who due to medical conditions retired young (35 or so) and he rides his pan all over the US but he babies that bike. There is definitely a learning curve to learning to ride one too.

I babysat one for a couple of years and I was always fixing something. I had a shovelhead for a good time too and it loved the way I ride (lots of throttle) but it couldn't hang too long at it. Nothing major but I was always fixing it.

In all honesty I've been riding "throw-aways" for the last 8-10 years (old rice bikes picked up cheap) and average very little down time even with high speeds, all weather, and long distance rides.
