Two prototypes of the EWR VJ 101C were built in response to a requirement for a Mach 2 interceptor with a VTOL capability. They were powered by six Rolls-Royce RB.145 turbojets, two of which were installed vertically in the fuselage for vertical left and the other four were mounted in pairs in the wingtips. The wingtip nacelles could be swiveled from the horizontal to the vertical for conventional and vertical flight. BAe adopted a more efficient solution to the problem of the jet-powered VTOL combat aircraft, albeit subsonic, with the Harrier.
