When our oldest son would come home from school with a note I'd ask, "Why did you get into trouble?"
"Well, Jake was talking to me.."
"I don' t want to hear about Jake. Why did you get into trouble?"
"But, Jake wouldn't stop talking to me and.."
"Don't tell me about anybody but you. Why did you get into trouble?"
"I was talking during study time."
"Don't come home and tell me somebody else got you into trouble. You take care of yourself - do right - accept responsibility when you do wrong. Don't blame anybody else when you're talking to me."

Hasn't had much effect, yet, but I hope that he'll remember later in life, when it really matters.
