Re: milatary

do what you like, but i wouldn't. the things we are fighting over right now don't seem like our business to me, but if it works for you do it up. i might join up anyway, if i didn't have such a great life now. if i didn't have so many close friends, and wasn't so close to my fiance and family, i'd prolly be all over it. but it would be a survival thing for the money, and i'd only be there because i didn't have anything else going for me.
if you want to see the world, and you don't have a whole lot tying you down at home. go for it. it isn't that bad. my advice is don't join if you already have a life, because the miilitary will soon be it.

Re: milatary

You should go talk to some people who are already in or have been and have discharged in the past few years. Try to stay away from the recuiters, until you're ready to sign and know more about what you want.
What are your goals? College money? Training for a trade? Looking at making a 20 year career out of it? You willing to take orders without question and follow them to the letter? You're GOING to get sent over to the sandbox if you go in. That's a guess on my part but I think it's pretty close to being accurate.
I did 10 years in the Navy and I'd never ever give that time back. I loved it. It's a very fulfilling job. I was in aircraft maintenance then inspection. Now I have a good job that I like and what I learned was from my time and training in the service.
I'm sure other's will chime in. I'm in support of EVERYONE going into the service of some sort. Lots of people would have greatly differing looks at themselves and the world. I've been to and worked with servicemembers of more than a few different countries and some of the countries have a mandatory 2 year program for the guys. Some said it was great and they were happy to do it, but they only did the minimum...others did 5-10 years and enjoyed it also.
Basically it comes down to what you want so think about it and talk to as many people as you can.

You sir are going to get flamed. Just preparing you for your destiny on here. You make it sound like joining the United States Military is like throwing your life away or something to do if you have zero motivation or confidence in yourself ever being anything worth a damn. You talk like a child.

Re: milatary

In his defense the reason that people believe in this country and all of our rights is because of the freedoms that we claim and claim all people to have. People may flame but he's entitled to his opinion and we AS AMERICANS have to tolerate (if we disagree) and respect his position.

I know, and I didn't tear him up for saying that. That may be his political belief, and that's fine, but he pretty much made joining the military sound like it's one step before a person commits suicide.

Disagree with us fighting a war...fine, whatever. But do not make the people of the military seem like losers. That's just disrespectful.

Re: milatary

So you decided that his statements meant that his opinion was losers are in the military?
It's a simple fact that you do give up one life for the life you have in the military. I'm not speaking for him...but it seems some misunderstanding has happened here.

hey man, i have the utmost respect for our military, and i know that for many, many people that have joined, it is the greatest thing that could have ever happened to them, and that they are doing what they are doing to make the world a better place. my point of view is that the military is a huge commitment, and that it may be more than some people want to take on once it's too late to take it back. i may deserve to get flamed, but i just wanted the kid to think about what it means beyond what the commercials tell you. my father in law, who is 51 just got back from his 3rd tour of duty, after being told that he wouldn't have to leave again after his 1st trip. he is alive and well, and doesn't resent the military, but that is several years of his life that he won't get back. he doesn't really have the option to leave the service at this point or even before he left for his last tour, because he would risk his retirement pension. it has been a great career for him, but it has also been a much bigger part of his life than i would want my job to be. i'm sorry if i sounded childish. i was only saying the first thing that came to mind. when/if there is a war that i see as necesary, as many of ours have been, i will be in line to go, just as you may be. another holocaust? a threat to our allies or even our own country, yes i will be there. women aren't allowed to vote? not my problem. these issues will work themselves out without me. they always do.

I think a mandatory 2 years is probably wise....not likely to ever happen in this country. I think it would give us all a better perspective.

Really?

You talk like a child.

Sounds like you at least attempted to.

he pretty much made joining the military sound like it's one step before a person commits suicide.

Did I read his post wrong? TheChief86 uses "I" statements, meaning he gave reasons why he's not enlisted. Far from anything remotely sounding like "join the army only if you wanna die!"

You sir are a tard. How is Afgahn none of our business?

Anyway on to a more important subject.
If you want to know about the army let me know I just got out last year. I also have been working as a contractor for the navy for the past 9 months so I have a bit of insight into them as well.

Look into all of your options don't jump on one without looking around.

Why are you looking at joining the Military? Are you trying to get away from where you are now, are you looking to develop new skills, or do you want to make a lifelong career out of this?

A deciding factor can be what types of things you are into. Planes? Boats? Tanks?
Do you already have a specific skill set? Commo? IT? Mechanic? Electrical? Engineering?

You'll probably get a lot of feedback about how the Army is full of BS or the Navy is full of BS; or how the military will yank your chain, or whatever. Just remember that any job you have (civilian) is going to have it's fair share of BS and chain yanking.

I am also a contractor on an Army Post and it seems that the contractors do the work that the soldiers normally do. It seems there's lots of downtime for them. Must free up time for training or whatnot. A future perk of being in the Military is that it gives you priority over other people who are applying for federal government jobs.

dont have time now but, ill be back later to expalin the pros and cons

oh if i had the choice to do it again ?

YES, without a doubt or second thought

i may not always like the politicains in charge but this :us: is always worth defending if you believe in it, no matter the cost

You need to tell us a lot more about you. Why are you interested in the Army over the others? What do you want to get out of the military? Everyone is looking for something different.

sorry if i created a stir up between y'all the reason for me wanting to go into the military is because though im only 17 and a senior in high school i dont really see anything going for myself here at home. my grades arnt quite good enough to obtaine any scholarship grants or i would be going to college. the military seems like a good idea because there are many skills out there to learn and i hear in most cases they will help pay tuition for schooling. and so all in all its mainly because id rather help my country in any way i can, and gain a different perspective on life than just waste away here in myrtle beach south carolina! :search:

thats a fine reason for goign into the military, but there are several branches of the military to join. i would consider all options before choosing one...

and i know several people that went into the military to get through college, ROTC then service. they ended up getting a good college education then when they started their service they were already a higher ranking than just enlisting.

dont know if you really want to go to college or not but that might be an option.

though i never went into the military, i have the highest of respect for those that serve our country.

Re: milatary

thanks, jackass. i like how i get labeled as retarded, simply over not sharing your opinion. i didn't say you were retarded if you want to get in on this. let me put it this way: the middle east is none of MY business. if it is your business, go get it. this kid seems to have the right motives for joining the military, and it could very well be the best thing for him. i have obligations to take care of here in tennessee, so i will do that until something i believe in fighting for comes along. either way, you are right about telling him to scout his options and find what is right for him. there are many people who are not involved wht the military that are far from being "tards"

Re: milatary

Really! I wasn't harsh, I simply made a statement.

Sounds like you at least attempted to.
What?

I didn't mean that as saying joining was LIKE suicide....I said he made it sound like joining the military is the step a person takes as a last resort to suicide for hating their life.

Get your panties out of a wad. His post came across as a selfish inexperienced child. That's all.

Hey man...don't discount yourself just because of your grades. People put WAY too much stock into test scores and grades these days. My younger brother didn't do too hot in high school either but he has something that a lot of people who I know that had good grades didn't have....the ability to work hard like crazy. That's his ticket.

My advice, find something you truely enjoy doing and let that lead your way. If you feel that you were called to join the military, then do so. Don't do it because you feel it's your only option...because it's probably not. You're just letting what other people tell you about grades and success dictate how you feel right now.

Do yourself a huge favor and read "No More Mondays". I know you're only 17 and you're not working full-time yet, but I think it will help you out with what you're trying to figure out right now.

Oh yeah...just a fun little fact...there is absolutely NO correlation between someones grades and their financial success in life. Now, if you're a lawyer or doctor that statement is a little less true, but it holds water for all else.
