Midwest rust!

So...I tore out my carpet in the hatch today, as well as the back seat, and found a couple spots that need some lovin. I hate midwest rust!

The rest of the back looks to be in good shape. I'm thinking I will just pull the rest of the interior out, and do some spot sanding on the rusty parts, then herculine the inside. Any tips anyone?

sand it all down and use some of that rust converter primer then repaint. good as new.

my 90 was undercoated with some ziebart treatment forever ago. It has held up really well but there are a few holes here and there in the drivers floor area. I am going to repair that and undercoat it again. even the axles were coated, and the stuff held up pretty good for 20 years of salt belt use.

Well...my main concern is that the carpet was wet when I pulled it up. Meaning my hatch has a leak in it somewhere. So I'm gonna at least herculine the cargo area so I dont have to worry about the leak, and I was wanting to rip the carpet out anyways since thats where I throw all my tools and junk.

I'm thinkin I may just leave the front alone. The carpet is still in good condition, and I dont wanna ruin it.

ok...soooo....I pulled the majority of the interior out:
back seat, cargo carpet, passenger seat, and center console. (I feel bad pulling out that carpet. The front is still in decent shape, but the rest is UUUUGLY!)

Anywho, I bought some duplicolor bed liner, and I was planning on doing the whole inside. Problem is, I still want it to resemble a daily driver (seeing as it is). And not having carpet is pretty tacky. Idk what to do now.

Put the bed liner down, then put the carpet back in the pass. areas.

Put the bedliner down, reinstall the seats and console, then cut the carpet to fit around them.

That way you can pull it out in pieces if you need to.

I hadnt thought of that. And I can pull it out before a wheeling trip too!

yeah thats nothing. lol.

Search for a product called POR-15. you can get it from eastwood or most autobody suppliers.
its a rust encapslator. (prolly spelled that wrong) it comes in quarts and pints. its brush on. take a wire brush to the worst part. brush it on then put your bedliner on over it.

I bedlined the entire interior and then laid the carpet back down in only the front. Make sure you rip that nasty insulation off of it prior to putting your carpet back in. That is where it traps the moisture and causes rust.

I looked at your pics, did you just use a grinder cutoff wheel to trim the bad stuff out? I'm soon going to have to tackle my 96 and its as bad or worse than yours...

I'm thinking of using 18 gauge for the patches...what did you use?

Are you gonna weld them in? Rivet? or just screw them in?

I used a grinder and cut off wheel for most of it.

I replaced it with a lot of scrap stuff. I have no idea what guage cuase it was all different. I used one thin piece of license plate in one patch everything else I used was thicker than that. Sorry I can't be more help! I can tell you that the pieces I used I could not bend to fit by hand I had to use a hammer so it was pretty stout.

If you have any of the quaterpanels or what not left laying around from your built jeep use them they would work great lol.

all the scrap body parts laying around went to the scrap yard...yesterday.

i have a hookup on good clean metal for .25 a pound and can get pretty much whatever i want, just have to tell the guy.

I'm going to cut the bad out, and then weld patches in over the open areas. It doesn't need to be a restomod just fuctional for the mild to moderate wheelin its built for and some street driving. I'm going to coat the floor in duplicolor bedliner when i'm done.

I needed a very pliable piece since it was in a contorted area! It worked great!

well...I found my first hole in the floor today! I was using a screw driver to make sure there were no really soft areas, and sure enough, the first place I poked, the screw driver went through it like butter! Its in the back seat area, right in front of the cross brace on the passenger side.

oh, and the wire wheel I've been using to try to get the rust out isnt working at all. ideas?

Angle grinder! It works awesome, and is a must for any Jeep owner. Grinding wheel and a cutting wheel.
