Marines shoot "scrapper" on base

thats what they get. They could GET A JOB and not rely on stealing scrap metal to survive ! They were probably strung out on meth like they are around here. They just steal catalytic converters around here though, usually right off the car

I think they got their ROE's a little confused...Iraq/Afghan, sure, here...thats questionable. But hey, they acted with purpose and violence of action so bravo.

If the area they were gaurding was a containing live ordinace then they acted appropriatly, if it was just a simple perimeter roving guard, that raises some issues.

Funny story though: I was talking to a SF guy here on post and we were talking smack about Marines. Not the point: He told about a time in Ramadi when they were attached to Marines. They were on a rooftop and all of a sudden the whole section started lighting up a building about 400yrds out. The SF guy asked one of the privates what he was shooting at and he said "I don't know but he's shooting" pointing to the guy next to him. He ended up walking all the way down the line to find out what they were all shooting at and nobody had a clue. Anyway, I thought it was funny. :yelclap:
re-read the article...they were in a training area, and out here, training area means area that gets bombed, shelled, and otherwise blown up. There is a lot of unexploded ordinance, hence the signs you see when entering the base through the desert.

Doesn't EOD come out for any UXO? Thats what they do in the Army. :dunno:

There are impact areas all over the mountains around El Paso and even the range areas at Bliss and MacGregor Range where they have left UXO. Signs up not to stray off trails and whatnot. Just a buncha old stuff that they either haven't found or is too unstable to deal with.

This is the world's largest Marine Corps Base. Its something like 960 square miles I think. Most of it is empty desert used for training maneuvers, bombing ranges, missile ranges, etc. It would be pretty hard to keep the whole area free of UXO

im a Marine

in some places on my base it is made VERY clear that if you are trespassing. you WILL be shot.

i held a very high ranking person at gun point bc he was where he should not have been.

i was in the right and nothing came of it.
the Marine was doin his job. :D

Lethal force is authorized under several situations, one of them being to protect the lives of others from imminent harm.
They had to stop these guys because like was mentioned before, they very likely had something very dangerous that, when they got to thier destination, could have harmed or killed others. Shoulda called in Artillary if you ask me for some training on a moving target :)
But 5.56 is definitly not a vehicle stopping round. If thats all they had, then sure. And it worked, so bravo. Gotta make use of what you have.
Oh yeah BTW, 6 years as a marine here also. and i was STATIONED there at 29 Stumps. Theres a TON of nothing out there. I loved it.

Anybody read that article about the scrapper in the SD Reader a couple years back? Wish I could find it online... The author interviews this crazy desert wacko scrapper. The guy built a little compound for him and his wife and made a living scrapping, mostly aluminum bomb fins. This guy was a pro though. He'd been doing it for many years, strictly at night. The coolest part of the article was about the rail he built. No lights, no guages, no nothing, just fast as hell. He takes the author out one night and they get chased by a helicopter, but he manages to out run it. Of course it's in the Reader so who knows if it's true...

One time at my last station we had a guy climb the fence and "sneak" onto base in broad day light, I was at the smoke pit and he came up to me asking for a light. I asked him for I.D. when he produced a revoked navy I.D. card from the 70's! I called my OOD. When he arrived the man became angree and produced a hand gun luckly for us it was not loaded. The man was nuts he was screaming about how the Coast Guard stole his boat and the Marines had failed him.

Goes to show that people want to get on Govt. property for some really odd reasons.
