Hey guys,

I need a local machinist to drill out the hole for a speedo sensor in a WJ NV242 I just picked up (sourced from a 2004 model):

The resulting hole will need to seal to the O-rings on the sensor module, so I'm thinking professional assistance would be beneficial. Anyone know of a shop they can recommend? Thanks in advance!

I wonder if there is another housing that would be a direct swap out for you that would already have the hole. Could be cheaper then the labor to have that machined out. Then again a good hole saw and a drill press with a work surface that can be angled could do the trick.

Is that really a good idea? How smooth does the bore of this hole need to be? The speedo sensor seal is around the circumference of the sensor itself, so I'd think it needs to be somewhat smooth and somewhat precise.

Shrek - I'm definitely entertaining the idea of finding a replacement tailshaft housing but can't seem to get any solid answers on sources... Would a 231 tailshaft housing work, or would I need to hunt down an XJ/ZJ 242?

looks similar to a 242 tailhousing i would find one and compare, why the need to bore it, whats it going in?

It's going in a 2001 XJ... As stated in my initial post, I need the hole drilled out to accommodate the speed sensor. In the vehicle it was pulled from (2004 WJ), the speedometer sensor is at the wheel rather than the transfer case output shaft.

I guess the next step will be to go ahead and pull the tailshaft housing to verify that the output shaft even has the requires teeth and to see just what drilling will involve.

I know one advertised feature of the 242 in the late model WJ is that it cam be shifted on-the-fly at speeds of up to 55 MPH... Is this a special revision or are all 242s that special?

Thanks for the info... They referred me to a gentleman named Tim who might be a bit difficult for me to find time to work with (as he's only available M-F "before dinner").

I might be willing to get a hole saw and a Dremel and tackle this myself... Does anyone know the stock speedometer sensor bore diameter off-hand?
